Second time w/episcia seeds

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

Watering my episcias this am,I noticed the stem behind one of the pods was withering so I removed it and squeezed the seeds out.

then I snuggled them down into a bed of vermucilite, covered the pot w/ palstic wrap and put them on the heat mat. These seeds were taken fron Silver Skies #2

I've got about 5or 6 more pods on two other plants. Faded Jade and Silver Skies #1. Weee! Winter fun!

Do you find that the seeds germinate better in vermiculite? I used potting mix and perlite for my streps and they germinated in 10 days. I also got achimes seeds from vanillaman and they are in the mix about 4 weeks with nothing happening. I have a few more and I think I'll try them in vermiculite and see what happens.

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

I like doing the tiny seeds over the vermucilte so they can sprouted easier and to keep down the knat problems during the winter months.

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

You are so lucky getting those episcia seeds! Again! Next year I am going to put some outside so maybe nature can take it's course. I sure can't pollinate them after many tries. I can't wait to see the Silver Skies offspring.

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

I'm hoping SS crossed w/ Strawberry Patch and I'll get SS compact growth and small leaves w/ at least some SP coloring.....and maybe Kiwi(Kee Wee) markings. Can't remember if KW bloomed or not.

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Sounds neat! Can't wait to see what you get. Exciting...

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

It takes a while before you can tell the keepers. I had 72 young plants when I finally was able to start marking possilbe keeps. Thirteen out of 72 on the first cut with only 2 kept at the final cut.

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Do you have pics of the two you kept?

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

Yeah but one looks pretty sad. Bugs got to it while it was still out side and I had to strip the damaged leaves off when I brought it in

Hold up...I think I took pix of both back in the spring. Lemme do some browsing.

Here we go. This is the one I've named Pink Pigeon because the grey in the leaves reminds me of a grey pigeon and it has pink veins and darker pink of the reverse side of the leaves. Pod parent plant Faded Jade is to the right

This one is simular w/ the metallic grey color ,a little pink backing on leaves but no pink veins

VERY nice!! Would love to swap for a stolon when it gets some!! I am in my first experience with gessie seeds-- have Eucodonia up today ^_^

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Your Pink Pidgeon is beautiful! I'd say an improvement over Faded Jade. I love the nice large leaves. Congratulations, bigred!

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

It was Pink Pigeon that looks bad. I just tore it down, cleaned it up and potted up the stolons and cuttings. Only got 5 out of it. Hope they all live. The other one is looking good and I may take a couple of the larger stolons off to propagate

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

The picture don't show the metallic grey very well.

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

When I posted before, I didn't see the metallic grey one. Another nice one. I know that this whole experience was fun for you wondering what will the seedlings turn out to be on your very own hybrids.

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

Culling part was tough on the 13 down to final 2...other,not so much as they all look lke FJ.

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Yes, that's the way with seedlings but at least you did get two that were nice and different. I grew out some episcia seedlings once from somone else's cross and none of the bunch were keepers. All were sort of muddy looking and dull. I can't remember the parents offhand but anyway the anticipation was fun and a rewarding experience.

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

Yes,I can't wait to see some sprouts in the pots and I have two more pods left ripening on the plants.

Williston, ND

I hope you get good things,I grew two from seeds and entered them at the avsa nat
in denver, got ribbons too, blue I think ,ive since lost them and would like to find a simular one to grow again, youll have fun with them

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Woo-Hooooooo! Way to go! ^_^ and in just 2 weeks too-fantastic! Can't wait to see what you've got....

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

it takes quite some time from seed to see what's a keeper. Hope ya don't mind a lot of pix of the process...LOL

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Mind? Silly girl...bring 'em on! ^_^

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

okey dokey...you asked for it

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

here's an update on the new seedlings. Three pods from thre different Silver Skies and just harvested one pod from Faded Jade with one more pod on the plant still ripening.

#1 Silver Skies x? sewn11/11/08

If you look closely you can see smaller newly sprouted seedlings amongst some older seedlings ....all from the small pod.

They look good and I'm hoping for something extra special.

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

I'm seeing a bunch w/ lil dark patches in the center of the leaves. I'm hoping for some red foliage w/ markings like Kee Wee......on dwarf plants

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Keep posting the progress...

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

will do
