Need A Crinum Growers Advice

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

This year I traded for a lot of crinum. Having never grown them before I haven't a clue as to how deep to plant them. The bulbs I've gotten have been potted up just to hold them til I can get them in the ground. Hopefully this weekend. Do they need to be planted deeper than what you see in the picture?

Thanks!

they look fine to me esp. if you're gonna transplant inground this weekend. The offsets look sad for a long time after potting or planting inground, yet I've never lost one. very tough.

I agreed, most of the common, old fashion crinums such as 'Milk & Wine' and C. x Powellii are very hardy (from my experience), they've been in my garden for decades, keep multiplying, though, they took several years to mature from bulblets. Flowering age crinum bulbs are as big as a large Red onion in sizes. There are tropical crinums like those of gigantic size, however, are said to be tender/tropical.

Love crinums! Just discovered them last year and bought a pot containing two from Plant Delights. A friend and I split the cost ($24.00) for the pot, split the bulbs and I have already had to divide mine! Multiple bulblets and beautiful blooms. Love 'em!

Which one did you get, Hemophobic? PDN carries some really great ones.

We're suppose to have a bit of a warm up in the next few days .. that's when I'm dragging everything out of the greenhouse that isn't suppose to be in there. We had a frost a month early this year and a lot of plants went into the greenhouse that I hadn't planned on, plus the fact I didn't have time to spray the foliage. It's so crowded in there I'm really worried about spidermites and aphids. I am definitely getting everything in the ground that can go in the ground asap.

Can't wait to see my babies blooming!

tggfisk: It was `Summer Nocturne' and it's been such a great performer. I have shared a bulb with my neighbor, planted some out and put others in pots, not to mention the clump I put back in the ground after dividing. I say that's a keeper! And it smells good, too.

Yep, some do. They're lilies, after all, and most lilies have a fragrance.

C. Ellen Bosanquet has a lovely fragrance, too:-)
