Brug Cuttings

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

I recently acquired several Brug cuttings. Since I'm sort of very new to brugs, I tried an experiment ... since I had so much to experiment with. I cut some of the stems in sections between the nodes, and 8 out of 12 of them rooted, and are looking like they're going to make it.
The ones I put in water, and added peroxide... changing the water/peroxide daily... are wilted, and looking very bad.
The ones I put in water w/o peroxide... changing the water once a week... have the white knots on them, and are ready to pot up today...
So, now I know more about what works for me.

Just thought some of you might be interested.
These are the ones I cut in sections, the eight that and are rooted and have starts coming up. They are Pink Beauty, and Autumn Treasure.

QUESTION: Do I now add soil to cover those exposed stems? or leave them bare?

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

Congratulations on your beautiful looking brug babies. I never started my brug cuttings such as you did but know that many other growers have had luck growing them this way. JMO, I would probably cover the exposed stem with a bit of dirt. I also used to root my brug cuttings in water with hp added but have also had better luck just putting the cutting in dirt.

Happy gardening, Jan

You have done a Great Job.. They look like they are about to take off.. I haven't used the log method but I think I would cover them as well...
Congrats!!

They do look healthy and happy.. yes, I agree, cover. Keep up the good work. You are on your way to the common brug addition. Welcome... my name is Tammie and I am addicted to brugs......

LOL Hi Tammy

Thank you all for your help. I did go out and cover the log...
So, how big should I let them get before I put them in bigger pots?

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

you will know.. you will be watering a lot more often .... I have some that I am having to water every day.... they are begging to be potted up again... trying to make them wait until spring. I have the big rope handled tubs in the garage waiting for them.. they will be so very happy!

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Well, I do hope these little babies will wait till spring too...cause I'm just running out of room on the sun porch to put anymore big pots... I can probably go a little bigger, but not tubs until spring.

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

They will be fine in those until spring.. they will really take off when the days start to get longer in the spring. Don't worry. You are fine until then. Relax and enjoy.

Millsap, TX

Looks like they will be fine in the post they are in for some time...
I have a few I keep in the small pots.. In Spring I sink the pots and let them grow out come fall I dig the pots and bring them in..It is kinda the best of both worlds for me. We are so Hot and Dry they seem to do better in a sunkin pot than just planted in the ground..I like the 3gal. ones the best..Do you plan on keeping them in pots? or putting them in the ground?
Kylie

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Well, I planted two in the ground this year... just cut them back to the ground and covered them with mulch to winter... I'm taking instructions from all I've read here... and am told in my area, they should come back from the root in the spring... if not, I've rooted the part that I cut off to replace them.

Millsap, TX

Not sure where Kemp is.. I'm in Millsap.. Mine do come back but it takes FOREVER for them to bloom..LOL .. If you take large cuttings (the stalk and the Y..) once rooted and placed back out you should get blooms early...
Kylie

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Kemp is about 50 miles east of Dallas...
Maybe that's why I didn't get blooms this year... they were just cuttings this past spring, and I put them in the ground around June...
So, if I keep cutting them down, and starting all over each year.. I may never get blooms... except from large cuttings... right?
I do have 2 others that I kept in pots, and are about 4' tall now... they didn't bloom either this year.

Millsap, TX

Take them to the garage and let them go dormant or inside and continue to grow...Come Spring with some TLC and some food you are primed for early blooms...

Oh, good... they're on my sun porch now.

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

bj, you can take smaller cuttings and get blooms earlier as long as the cuttings are from above the "Y". Will your sunporch be heated or stay above treezing?

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, it does stay above freezing out there, and I do have a heater out there.

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

oh, don't cut them to the ground.. just trim for your cuttings and before the first freeze, wrap the main trunks and above the Y with bubble wrap.. if they are in a protected area, they will have a chance of surviving. We did that with one last year and in the spring everything under the bubble wraped areas survived and began growing! WE are bubble wrapping 4 brugs this year.. taking cuttings too but you can't save what you don't try saving. It can't hurt! And if you have your cuttings, why not at least try saving some of the main plant to see if you can get a head start for the spring growing!

I think my Brug has gone crazy...it has a lot of buds some are small others look like they are about ready to bloom. Isn't this kind of late in the year for it to start putting out buds? Last year it was mid summer I think. It's really cold here in the morns not freezing yet.

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

I brought all mine in. and some were full of buds. Most of them have fallen off, but I still have a few. Will they open? I have a grow light on them, and I'm watering them daily.

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

My brugs are putting on buds late also... just seems to be a late year. The rains came late also as is the cold. Our first freeze was last night... and barely that...31 a week later than I can ever remember it. We always had our first freeze by halloween.

Audrey, I dug all my brugs up and they are in the basement now and, yes, I have blooms opening and spreading their sweet fragrances enticingly inviting me to come downstairs and revel in their beauty....AHHHH!!! In fact, the brug (Insignis Pink) that is currently blooming is bare-rooted. I dug the plant up several weeks ago and didn't replant it in a 'new' pot yet. Regardless that it is in the 'condition' (bare-rooted) that it is, she held onto her buds and I have had blooms for the past three weeks. I did put it in a pot of water tho and added some hydrogen peroxide. This past weekend I finally HAD to dig up my Solid Gold which hasn't/hadn't stopped blooming. I really felt bad that I had to do this but the weather is in for a change (s-n-o-w, yuck!!!) and I don't want to lose her so I did the 'dirty deed'. Besides, I needed to send out some cuttings that I had promised of SG.

Ah-hah!!! Hi "LL" ... See, I sacrificed SG's blooms for ya!!! Enjoy her beautiful gold blooms next year :)

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

I'm watching closely!!!

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

You sacrificed her beautiful blooms just for little ole me? I feel so humble. Will enjoy them double next year and so will my Dr. I am sure the snow would not have been so thankful.

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Audrey, once your plants are indoors, you need to cut down on the watering. Brugs in active growth use up a lot of water so the roots aren't immersed completely in water for long. Roots have access to oxygen rather quickly. In cooler weather, plants don't take up water as fast leaving the roots in water for longer periods leaving them vulnerable to root rot — the number 1 winter killer. Use you finger tips to check the soil. If the top 1" - 2" is dry, water. If you are going to let them go semi-dormant, use less water less often.
