Ann ~ I wondered if you took cuttings on your lovely Confederate Rose. Are you rooting in water or soil?

Pod, I cut one of the branches off because it was in 2 neighbors' yards. Then I cut that into 6 pieces and put in water I had added Super Thrive to. Within 3 days I had nubs and a few roots. In a week I had really good roots so I planted all 6 of these in potting soil in a BIG pot. No, they aren't blooming yet but they have lots of new leaves. I keep them moist and in bright shade and bring them into the garage when the weather gets really cold. My sister-in-law had all sorts of these "roses" but had to leave them behind when she moved to Sealey. I told her that I would give her the biggest plant this spring or early summer as she really misses her plants. She has had health problems and can't get into the yard as she once did but that doesn't stop her from enjoying the birds and the flowers. Today, as a matter of fact, we are celebrating her 74th birthday at a local restaurant - a big surprise for her. Her daughter made it plain that this was not to be a party, per se, just a gettogether of what is left of her family - she is widowed now. As a small token to commemorate the occasion I bought her a small kalanchoe since she needs some sort of indoor or windowsill plants so that she or my niece don't have to get out and plant something.
Hows that for a a simple answer? I DO tend to go on and on and on.... Thanks for asking, Pod.

Just wondering Ann, how long were the pieces you put into the water. I never heard of Super Thrive. Where does one get this?

Terrific results! That is wonderful and so special of you to share with your sister in law. I know she will appreciate it and look forward to blooms. I hope the birthday gettogether was a good time for all of you.

Interested in hearing more about Super Thrive too?

I got the superthrive at Houston Garden Center(s). A tiny bottle and you use just a few drops in each gal. of water. I measured in the top and that isn't large at all. It says it's a vitamin supplement and not a fertilizer. To tell the truth, it's a tiny bottle and I would need a good magnifying glass to be able to read all that's on it. All I know is that it works well at making things thrive.

Well, I read some of the questions here and completely passed over them because I was in kind of a hurry. All the cuttings were 2-3' long and they were in the water only about a week so I figured they were viable and I had better get them used to the soil right now so we planted them. We had a really nice gettogether and the food was pretty good (for a chain). Here I was feeling so sorry for Sue and found out she has a $2000.00 riding mower so that SHE can do the yard. My niece works long hours at the bank and doesn't like yard work. Any work that is done outside, she does it. My brother was super handy and spoiled her for any one who can't really do "chores" like fixing things, etc. so she learned to do these things herself and won't ask a neighbor to help her. Any work she can't do she hires it done. I don't doubt that she will be out there planting that Confederate Rose when she gets it.

Great info Ann. I will look for the superthrive at my local Houston Garden Center. There is a beautiful and very tall (about 20-25 ft.) Confederate Rose I have been swooning over in my neighborhood. I will ask the owner if I can take a few cuttings.

Good! Thanks for the info on Superthrive. Just read on another thread how it can be diluted and sprayed on foliage for a fertilizer too? I will have to look for it.

So glad your sis in law became independent. Shows the stuff she was made of. Hmmmm... I guess your brother chose well even tho he spoiled her. 8 ))

At one time, Home Depot also carried Super Thrive.
