New State Bird

Melbourne, FL

Children in grades 4 to 8 are voting today for a new state bird. The current one, the Mockingbird, is shared by 4 other states. Birds in the running are the Osprey, Great Egret, Black Skimmer, Snowy Egret and Brown Pelican.

The Osprey or the Egrets would be a cool start bird. Ours is the Willow Goldfinch Carduelis tristis but we originally had the meadowlark which was also shared by 4 other states.

oh, how cute.

Oooh cool choices :) That is great to let the children get involved!

It would have been neat to have been involved in something like this when I was in school. It was all left up to the politicians then.

Why not Florida Scrub Jay? Found nowhere else!

I don't know why the Scrub Jay was not included, should have been. (I have a feeling it was not included because it is a rarely seen bird. I have lived here over thirty years and have never seen one!)

The loser. He must have targeted the wrong group in his campaining for the state bird.

Yay!! I adore the Mockingbird, but the Osprey is a much better choice I think!

The only time I've ever seen a Florida Scrub Jay was in Daytona, at the airport. I walked out of the terminal with my luggage and saw it in a small tree in a concrete planter, right near all the cabs and shuttles. I couldn't believe it. I've been all over Florida many times and had never seen a one.

Yeah, it would'nt look too good for someone to ask what your state bird was, you say "Scrub Jay"...they ask "what does it look like?" and you say "don't know, have never seen one". My uncle used to live beachside, in Indialantic and used to have one that would take peanuts from his hand, but with all the building I'm afraid they are being displaced. Love your caption also, by the way! PS I see Ospreys all the time.

"Hmmm. Florida, that's up and over there in the northern hemisphere, isn't it? It's quite a flight, but do you think if we left now, we'd get there in time for the celebrations"?

Fantastic news, GP. You'd probably never have guessed that I quite like Ospreys myself.

The bill has to be sponsored and go through the Legislature to be finalized. Great pic of your Ospreys, Margaret.

The bill has to be sponsored

Do the talons, wings, eyes, etc., also have to be sponsored?
