Chicken Lice/Mite Problem - Need Help!

Clarksburg, MO

Well in showing off my cochin babies (3 months old) to my hubby, I discovered they are covered with bugs. How do I know whether they are lice or mites? What do I look for? How do you treat lice or mites? Are the treatments the same?

I really need some help with this as I am totally stupid with this!

This should help--In my limited experience, lice are pale and slow--mites darker and more active--but it varies on the species.

Okay--I forgot the link. My bad.

Sheila - I use this product and it's excellent and has quickly dealt with lice and mite infestations in adult and young birds. (I just typed mice and lite infestations - I have never had a chicken infested with mice!!) Deals with them usually in just one application. Kind of dusty/messy to apply but definitely worth it. I use it in the dust bath now as a preventative.

It's only $3.99 and they shipped fast!!

I got Diatomaceous earth from http://www.earthworkshealth.com/ They shipped fast and I have enough to last me a LONG time! Fantastic stuff... I use it a lot in the house and outside. I've put it on my dog for fleas too. Great stuff..

Silkiechick posted that she uses Adam's flea and tick mist in a blue plastic spray bottle. I have that too.. it's from Walmart.. super cheap and quick. I use the DE for preventative... and in the garden.
