I live in Aridzona and am trying to build something of a wildlife garden and was wondering if you all could ;
1 . Recommend outstanding wildlife plants that produce berries , fruit or an abundance of seed suitable for birds ?
I live and garden in a hot zone 9 , I have to haul my water ,so low water use plants are to be desired .
2. Recommend nurseries in Texas that sell such plants ,that would do mail order . Seed sources for some would also be appreciated .
Thanks
Recommendations for Texas native plant nurseries ?
lonediver, what species of wildlife do you want to attract to your garden because you have to let that dictate what plants to purchase. Once you have decided who you want to attract, then it would be easier to make suggestions.
I visited Arizona's Game and Fish Dept's website. They suggested searching for your town/city and the words native plants or native plant societies. I came up with these links:

You'll find some helpful information. You should contact your local Coopertive Extension Office for some help as well.
Arbor Gate in Tomball, TX has an impressive spread of Texas natives and I know they ship. You could also check Ebay and The Daves Garden Market place.
I have not had the pleasure to see Doug's place yet but let me tell what he has taken on is
absolutely amazing!!. He has created the most amazing habitats around!! You should check out some of his threads on the SW forum.
Love is a gypsy I am off to check out that Arbor Gate.
I like these for seeds:

I know what you mean about watering. It's really hard to carry water to a plant, even temporarily, to get it established.

Have you tried Natives of Texas in Kerrville? Linda might know if they ship, or she might have been there before, depending on where she lives in Medina Co. Too bad they weren't there when I lived in Kerrville many years ago.

I've been to Natives of Texas and it is one of my favorites nurseries! I always have a good time when I'm there and leave there with great native plants. As far as I know, they still don't ship plants....unfortunately.
I called over the summer and can confirm that they don't ship. Too bad, since they had some stuff I couldn't find anywhere else!

Sounds like some people need to get together for a road trip! LOL
Oh that sounds like a great idea, Stephanie! It would be fun to visit Natives of Texas and other great places with DG folks who are so knowledgeable.
I went to Wildseed Farms just outside of Fredericksburg with my DD in June. We filled the back of her Honda Element and the plants were fabulous and healthy. They do sell seeds, but I don't know if they ship plants.
I LOVE Arborgate, close enough to me - in Tomball. Enchanted Forest is in Sugarland - also a wonderful spot with lots of natives. Joshua's here in Houston is honest about selling only natives, some places aren't so.
If you do go to Natives of Texas, you might consider also stopping by the town of Medina on Hwy. 16. Medina also has a native plant nursery which is really interesting. No website, but this has a little map. The gardens are just beautiful.

Oh, let me know if you are planning to go...maybe I could go up also and meet you.
You all make me wish I lived in Texas more and more.........
Come on over, Marie!
Linda - that would be really fun! My DD has some of her art work in a gallery in Fredericksburg - that's pretty close isn't it? My sister just moved to Texas from Colorado (she lives in Grapevine) and she and I may need to take a road trip. I'm wanting to show her the great places in Texas, and she wants to see the Hill Country.
