AV trailer question

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

I was just reading the trailer thread and got to wondering...
If you start a trailer from a leaf, should you separate the babies or just leave them all together??
Probably separate 'cuz thery are on different roots...right?
I am expecting a couple of different trailer leaves and it's my first time with trailers...
Does that make me a 'trailer virgin'???
lol...

Good link for growing trailing violets -

Interesting...

History
The Tinari greenhouses introduced the
very first trailing African Hybrid in 1954
at the AVSA Convention. It was called
“Wild Girl” and showed beautiful cascading
tendencies.

Veeerrry interesting!!!
I wonder how a trailer grown like a normal AV would do?
I may try it if I get a bunch of plantlets...just to see...
However, that's somewhere in the future...lol...

Have fun with them and see what you like and what works best for you. You will learn so much as you go along. The journey will be so rewarding. We all learn so much from our successes and even more from our failures. Feel free to keep asking questions and please do post your progress with your trailer leaves. What varieties did you get?

Deer Trail and Tiny Wood Trail...
=0)

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Nice!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I had both of those! Deer TRail is such a love. Tiny Wood Trail is so tiny she doesn't stand a chance living with me.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

Guess I'll have to put them in a terrarium...
Hmnnn...

Give it a go, and if you don't succeed the first time, I know there will be many more opportunities to try again. I'd be happy to share leaves with you in the spring.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

Thanks...haven't put down leaves for a long time, so I'm doing my best to remember what was successful for me...
Having to read a lot to joggle my brain!
I will succeed...I WILL succeed...I will SUCCEED!!!
LOL...

You will! And don't get upset about those leaves that don't make it...........count the ones who do make it!!!!!

GoldLeaf, that is great information at that link! I printed it out for my file! Thanks for sharing ... I might just own a trainling AV one of these days!

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Next spring girls, I will have not only trailer leaves but plants as well. I will keep you in mind 2manyplants and plantladylin. Count on it. I planted 2 more boxes just this morning of nothing but variegated trailer leaves.

Oh my goodness, are you going to have trailing babies, or what! Amazing! I sure admire your patience!

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

I found these neat hinged boxes at WM and liked them because the lids are so clear.

Great Greenhouse!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

ok..........got it Goldleaf..........on the boxes..........they aren't totally clear.......I can get those..........

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

That would be nice--not to have to use them upside down!! I'll have to look for them!

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

These are the best I've found so far. About as clear as they come. Other boxes with the solid plastic tops, I just use the box only with saran wrap to cover.

I also love the shoebox size salad greens containers from Costco. They are crystal clear and I do save those.

Not a trailing violet but this achimenantha blossom opened today. Sweet isn't it?

Wow! That is a beautiful plant! I don't remember ever hearing of Achimenantha before! Very nice!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

You make me so envious of your ability to grow anything, Goldleaf! She is outstanding!

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Gail...you're being silly. Why do I say that? Because, I received the nicest strep leaves yesterday from a most generous DGer...namely you. They are super. Firm and healthy. Here they are ready to plant. Not that they needed it but I did this only to keep them tip top until I planted them. I recut the stem end of each leaf, added some cool water and re-sealed the bags. Then stood the bags upright in a container. BTW, the baggies are so perfect for the strep leaves. Where did you find those?

Aren't those great for strep leaves. I found them at Hobby Lobby. If you don't have a Hobby Lobby, I will send you some. They are the best size! I believe that they come in packages of 100 each for 2.99. (could be less)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I just found a new bag of them. Jewelry Accessories 4x6
www.craftsetc.com

I am going to the website and see what they have.

good luck as I can't find them on the web site

Check Jo-Ann's fabric & craft stores too if you have them nearby. They usually carry those bags.

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

I saw a Hobby Lobby down in Florida. They must be a southern store chain?
Okay, Lin, wiil do.

(Zone 1)

WHERE did you see Hobby Lobby in Florida??!! I had never heard of it until folks here on DG were talking about it. I have wished they would open one here!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Hobby Lobby carries everything made (LOL)
Whenever my granchildren are coming I race over to Hobby Lobby to find good art projects for them..................and I am never disappointed and neither are the kids.

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

We were driving south on A1A from St.Augustine Beach and ended up actually in Daytona Beach and then turned around and headed back. It was last Friday on the cloudy semi rainy misty day. Couldn't do too much outdoors so ended up going for a big ride and having lunch out, etc. Where exactly that Hobby Lobby was, I forget now. I will try to find out. It caught my eye because I had heard folks talking about it and I'd never seen one before.

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

This might help for Florida store locations. Nothing in Daytona Beach.

http://www.hobbylobby.com/text/state.cfm?hlstate=FL

We did some side roads also besides A1A. I just can't remember exactly where we were when I saw it.

(Zone 1)

I bet it was in Palm Coast! That's an up and coming area and really growing! I will do a search and see if I can find it!

(Zone 1)

Oh, I see there's one on State Rd 312 in St. Augustine! I had no idea!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Give yourself enough time............as we used to say when we brought friends home from college, 'YOu just can't do Taft in one day". The stores are giant........I mean almost as big as a Sam's. I like to buy picture frames there or have pictures framed custom.

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Yes, I saw the store was huge. I wanted to go in but with one of our present company, I couldn't and feel at ease to look around. Custom framing around here is out of sight expensive. Prohibitive prices. I wouldn't even consider it for a second.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

That is why I go to Hobby Lobby for very reasonable prices with custom framing and they usually have very creative and knowledgeable people to wait on you (not always.......be careful)

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

I would almost agree with Gail . . . Hobby Lobby does have alot, but they don't have bees wax sheets!

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Are bees wax sheets for candle making?

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

That is what I have used them for in the past, although I'm looking for them to use in a different type of craft. Michaels used to have them, too, but now each place only has the bees wax in blocks. Someone in another forum gave me a link to where she purchases her wax sheets, so I'll have to order them, I guess. Unless a local place called Garden Ridge has them . . . they used to have candle making supplies, too . . .

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

I hope this link works for you...
