My friend gave me this lovely baby plant with two pretty blooms on it and told me it was an Angel's Trumpet Brug. I was to wait until the blooms died, cut it back and stick the cuttings in water. First she suggested I spray it to be sure all outside bugs are gone before bringing the stump inside. By the time it stopped blooming it needed to be transplanted into a much larger pot. I then sprayed it with what I thought was my regular flower spray, but I picked up the wrong bottle (I was in a hurry and forgot to look at the label). I sprayed the heck out of the plant and when I finished, I noticed the odor of the spray was not the normal flower spray I use. I looked at the bottle and I had sprayed the entire plant with ant and insect spray. I quickly got the hose and washed it off and prayed. I left it outside because the odor of that spray would not be good for my parrots and the stump was going into the bird room. Two days later there was not a leaf on the plant. Every leaf had curled up and fallen off.
I cut it back, kept the cuttings and put them in water as I was told to do, and brought the plant inside.
The cuttings got all sticky and rotted and I had to throw them out. I brought the monster plant with no leaves inside and less than a week later one of my lovebirds died. It was sitting beside his cage and I am not sure if the odor was the cause or not. The bird had not been showing any signs of illness. I know it was healthy because I bred all the birds I have and they are all from my stock. All other birds were o.k. The bird was about 9 years old.
Over a month has passed and I have the most beautiful green sprouts with leaves bigger than some of the birds. It seems to grow inches over night and I feel like Jack in the Bean Stalk. It is already at least three feet tall. I do not know what I do next. Will it bloom again before next summer ? If it keeps growing I will have to find another place for it. These things are magnificant and I am really excited about the fact I did not kill it and it is growing again. I have been reading posts from everyone and hopefully I will learn how to save the next group of cuttings. Of course, if you create all these monster plants, what do you do for space? They will not survive in NJ outside in the winter. When my Angel blooms, if it does, I will take a photo and share it with you. I am afraid this thing will outgrow the house before summer. Then what will I do?
I thought I killed my first brug. What do I do now?
J, I keep them 8 ft tall in big tubs, growing and blooming in my basement over winter. Have extra lights for them and a space heater when outside temps get around 0.. I have a parrot, but I don't keep plants around his cage.. sprayed or unsprayed. Sorry about your bird.
Yes, sorry to hear about your bird. You can always grow them in the spring/summer, cut a few stems and root them in the winter and start all over again in the spring.
J, mine overwinter in a greenhouse. If you have a basement or a garage whose temperature doesn't go below freezing, you could keep your Brug there. If cramped for space and must overwinter in the house, do as Lili suggests, take cuttings, place cuttings in a good sized container and add a small amount of hydrogen peroxide or add a bubbler (an aquarium pump, tubing and airstone to oxygenate the water to keep it clean and help cuttings root.) When you have time, go back to old postings or read the tabbed brug threads. There is a wealth of information in those old threads. If you don't want to read through each and every thread, use the search tool and a few keywords. Feel free to ask questions, you'll find plenty of enablers. LOL.
I am pretty sure the bird did not go to heaven because of your Angel ...people talk about them being poisonous but so are your tomato leaves etc ... it's great your plant survived (the bird may have inhaled some of the insecticide). yes go through all of the threads and the ABADS and the Brug growers site ...lots of info everywhere.
Congratulations on becoming another "collecter"
I appreciate your suggestions and comments, thanks so much. If this keeps up I may have to put an extension on to my greenhouse. I play around with mostly Jasmine and a few house plants, plus I propagate holly, etc. for the farm, but these plants facinate me and I would love to start collecting them. Holding them over during the winter in the greenhouse could be a problem. My stock jasmine plants are all large and space is a problem, that is why I brought this one inside. I do have two little guys besides the Angel, called Miner's Claim. The leaves are beautiful and varigaited. I must look it up and see that color the flowers will be. I have some reading to do ....thanks again. JB
Miner's Claim I think will be pink, JB. If you can just keep the pots with the roots in them from freezing in winter.. they will return from the roots each spring.. If they are well established brugs.
Yes, Aunt B, I looked up the Miner's Claim information I had and it says the variegated leaved are "frosted" with creamy borders and hues of white and yellow. It goes on to say the flowers are pink and it will grow only to 5' (seeing is believing). :>)
Keith Miner from California cultivated it and it is patented. Oh well! I took this photo of the one little one before watering....they are like baby elephants...all they do is drink.
That IS a pretty one! Reminds me of Snowbank with all the white on it.. I do have a couple small growers.. small so far anyway. MC sure looks happy under your care.
I did not even realize it was the same thing as the Angel until about two weeks after I had it. I was adding it to the greenhouse inventory and realized the names were similiar. Dumb me...anyhow, I actually only purchased one and when it arrived it was nearly dead. I called Logee's and told them I would try and bring it back but they insisted on sending me another. They had mailed me an order of tropicals on a Friday in 90 deg. heat. I should have had it the next day but it turned out it did not come and Monday was a holiday so they sat in the heat in the box for all that time. It was delivered Tuesday.
They replaced everyone of the plants and I brought back three of them so I had duplicates. I called and told them I had saved them and they were so happy for me. Wonderful people to deal with. Now I have two Miners and one Angel. Does that make me hooked on Bougs?????I am afraid so. I am also very happy to meet you all. You have been very nice to old me.
Hey, JB, nobody is old here, okay? cept maybe a couple of my brugs.. lol I kept thinking I had seen Miner's Claim offered by Logee's! That's where I purchased my first brugs so long ago.. before Miner's Claim was even thought of.. And Yes, you are hooked. Congrats!
AuntB I am 80 years old and holding. Holding what I am not sure, I just came in from mowing grass on the tractor. We are getting ready to open the Tree Farm for the Christmas Season and all has to be pretty and trimmed. Speaking of Logees they have a yellow brug called Jamaican Yellow that is to die for. I would love to have it. I gotta go shower I am a mess. Nite and thanks again for being so nice.
Your brug is very pretty. Post picture of the flower when you have them next year. Congrat and take care.
Like I said, JB..nobody is old here, you don't sound old..:) you have a few years on me.. and are probably more active than me! I have killed a cutting of Jamaican Yellow before.. it IS very pretty! I'll keep you in mind IF I ever come across the JY, again. I enjoyed talking with you and yes, like LilMerci asked, please post a pic when you get blooms on that Miner's Claim.
Good morning. I woke up this morning with a message from Brugie (I think that was the name) telling me I was using the wrong term for my so called Angel because unless it is a TRUE angel it is misleading to call it that. Not exactly those words but very good advice although, it upset me at the tone, considering I am such a novice at brugs. Oh well, I came here to learn. I do want to apologize if my using the term Angels Trumpet without knowning for sure if it was in fact a real one was wrong. How would I know?
Thanks again for all your help. It has been very nice talking to most of you. JB
P.S. I was wondering why Brugie did not post that message on this board and sent it to me privately? Hmmmm ! IHe maybe did not want to embarrass me in front of you.
That was nice. Maybe there should be a place for novice bruggies instead of here. That would eliminate this from happening again. Bye for now.
In trying to understand what brug JBerger had, I wrote to ask the question....
The following is what I wrote:
Hi,
I'm a little bit confused, and please don't mistake my question for criticism. I don't do that.
Question:
You keep referring to one of your brugs as Angel. Do you have the double Angel trumpet registered by AKA and named Angel? I wondered if since all brugs are Angel Trumpets if you had that particular double pink named Angel or if you were just referring to your brug as Angel. If you don't have the real B. Angel, it might be less confusing if you could find out what it's real name is or call it your Noid brug for No ID or unknown. If you have the real Angel, you are lucky. I'm sure many people would love to get a start from you.
Thanks,
Brugie
PS. I'm very sorry if you took my question to you the wrong way. It certainly wasn't intended to be mean or hurtful.

Brugie, I am just old and cranky today because it is Halloween and my broom is busted.
Also, I should have known anyone who knows so much about the NOID brugs has to be a nice person. All is forgiven and soon to be forgotten...(that happens at my age even when you do not want to.) Happy Halloween.
J, you were not singled out and please don't feel you have to apologize for calling your two new plants Angel. You are new to Brugs and the confusion is understandable. Maybe an explanation would help.
There are two Brugmansia associations, which by the way, we are not supposed to mention on this forum (Please read Dave's sticky:
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/494607/ ).
Many members of those associations were also members of Dave's Garden and some infighting between the groups spilled over into this forum. This happened long before I became a member so I don't know too many details other than a few bits and pieces. As a result, Dave had to ban mention of those groups. To avoid controversy, or to communicate with just one member, D-mail is used. They are very informative group and would encourage to join them. I belong to both. :-)
The genus of this group of plants is Brugmansia. The common name is angel trumpets (Sometimes the name is capitalized.). Some Brugmansias are 'named' cultivars and registered. If we don't know the name of a particular Brugmansia (Shortened to Brug.), we refer to it as a NOID or noid (No identity. It took me a while to figure that one out.). New members sometimes try to attach a cultivar name to an unnamed Brug not knowing that in doing so, it adds to the confusion.
t's really impossible to identify a cultivar using only a flower or a photo. Besides, there are so many look alikes to misidentify a Brug just adds to the confusion. So it's best to let the NOID remain a NOID. This is extremely important as there is so much wonderful sharing of cuttings wrong names would quickly spread. Another suggestion: Sometimes accidents happen, labels are switched, faded, lost. Unless the plant can be positively identified, it's best for it to become a beautiful NOID. Late winter this year, I had a horrible thing happen to a tableful of rooted named cuttings of Brugmansias and Plumerias. A swinging winch handle knocked the table over and in an instant named plants became NOIDS. I have a list of cultivars and once they mature and bloom, I may be able to salvage a few named ones.
Reputable nurseries are not immune to misidentifying Brugs. Earlier this year, I purchased Jamaican Yellow from two sources. I received some imput from DGer and also took a look through the photos published by both Brug associations (I use those photos as guides.) I knew, when I purchased the two that one of them was not Jamaican Yellow, but I loved the shape of the bloom. When I received them, I removed the label from the non-Jamaican Yellow. Now it is a gorgeous yellow with heavy aurea influence. Notice in my previous paragraph I say one can't ID a Brug through the use of a photo or bloom only, but I'm starting out from a different perspective. I'm starting with a name and am trying to verify or disprove whether it is using phenotypical characteristics exhibited by the two plants I am comparing, but I've wandered off.
Getting back to Angel. A hybridizer, Anne Kirchner-Abel. has registered a Brug named Angel and by convention that name can't be used to refer to a different Brug. In fact, she has a whole series of "Angels ...". Angels being part of the cultivar name. Most of us eventually get lazy and refer to these plants using the shortened generic name Brug.
I hope this explanation helps.
No problem, JB. Have a fun day today.
Veronica, your explanation is wonderful. Thank you.
What a wonderful explanation Bettedee...I feel so stupid havng put you wonderful people to this short and sweet discussion. I was just so excited when that NOID brug I have lived, I honestly didn't care what it was called.I just wanted to know more about the brugs etc. Now I am really curious and you all have helped me so much. Only problem, I want more. With names.Thank you all again for your time. JB
dear JBerger ...someone may have registered their Brugs as Angel this or Angel that ...but they don't own the word Angel ...I call my plants the Angels because to me that is what they are ...after all the common name is Angels trumpets.
We love your excitment and no one would ever want you to feel stupid ...you enjoy your Angels ...Brugs ...Noids ... Trumpets.
