Newbie question..

Linden, TN

Please bear with me as I learn the ropes of Brug growing....

I am getting ready to order some nice new pots for getting cuttings started... and my question about them is this..

What size pots should I start them in? I found on Ebay what I think is a reasonable amount for some 4½" pots... Are these big enought to start them in? I can get 100 of them for less than $30 with shipping... and I think that 100 should last me for awhile...

Or should I start them in a pot a bit larger?

Also, I have some potting soil mixed with MG garden soil.. is that a good mix to use for starting cuttings?

Any advice is surely welcome..

Thanks bunches,
Carolyn

Carolyn, the 4" pots are a little too small for cuttings so they may tend to flop over. For small cutting 6" long and up, an 8" pot would be better. Then gradually upgrade them. Now if your zone is 7b and higher, brug cuttings can be put out directly to the garden and mulch them well. They should root and survive the winter. One of my local gardener friend, that's how he does to increase his collection of brugs.

Carolyn, I use 3-1/2" X 3-1/2" X 5" deep pots that I buy from Charley's Greenhouse. If I have an extra large or tall cutting I use a gallon container. For most cuttiings, some DGers have used 16 oz red plastic drinking glasses (cups) you can buy from Wally World in packages. All you need to do is to cut a few holes in the bottom of the cup. They are cheaper than pots and best of all they are re-usable.

I have a little different view. For years I used the 4 inch pots for starting hundreds of cuttings each year. They work fine for me and I would still be using them except that we
started using 6 inch pots in order to avoid the labor of one "potting up".I use 6 inch cuttings.Any neutral to slightly acid ph,fast draining, mix should work for cuttings.Add some perlite or coarse sand to your mix.
Check Craigs list or some of your local landscapers for free pots.$30 sounds way too high for 4 inch pots.

I see that Veronica was typing at the same time.Good idea about the cups.
