Lourdes =)
FYI
Lourdes,
I just came on here to tell you that they are back! I saw this posting so I hope that means you got one!!
Gabi
I sure did Gabi (lol)
Thank you very much any way!
Alright!! Make sure you post a pic when you get it. You are going to be blown away by the size!
Gabi
I sure will. Thank you Gabi!
Mine is still dropping little pieces everywhere ... it's not a happy hoya! We are supposed to get down to 41 degrees tonight so I have a feeling my hoyas and most of my other plants are not going to be real happy. Thank goodness it will only be cold for a couple of hours! I brought all of my orchids inside but don't have room for anything else!
I wonder why, Lin. Kelly also said her's was dropping leaves. Mine dropped a bunch of leaves when I first took it out of the box, but it hasn't dropped any since then. I haven't done anything except hang it in front of an east facing window - no watering yet, and I received it last monday I believe. I also removed the bottom saucer (as usual). Hope that helps.
Gabi
Sorry to hear that Lin, I hope that it will stop soon. ¿Did you change the mix? If so, maybe it's adjusting to the new mix.
Good luck with it.
Lourdes
The first thing I do when I receive any plant is take that saucer off and throw it in the recycle bin. I think it's just a bit too warm and humid here. Well ... actually maybe my linearis will perk up - we had a temp of 45 last night and our high today was 67. Tonight it's going to be 39 degrees here and tomorrow only @ 60! We are having an unusual cool spell ... twenty degrees below normal temp's for this time of year! I brought my orchids and a few hoyas inside but the other hundred something plants and a few other hoyas are staying outside ... no room in my small house for any more plants. And I have a cat that likes to chew leaves ... don't want her thinking someone has restocked her personal salad bar! I have to watch that one like a hawk!
lol I hear you, I have a cat that messes up my plants too.
Temperatures here, have been colder that usual also. Good luck with your linearis I hope that it turns around.
Thanks Lourdes ... it's not one of my favorites now that I have it, LOL. So, I won't be real upset if it doesn't make it. I think I prefer the ones with the thick, fat leaves!
As Gabi said mine has been dropping leaves as well....Moved it from a northen window to southern exposure, so I'm hoping that helps. Took LOTS of cuttings to be on the safe side.
Lin, my other linearis which I just have a couple of cuttings of has fatter, lighter color leaves. I think overall I like it better than the EA one; however, Antone from dischidia.com says he thinks it's environmental, so I'm holding out hope!
I have kitties as well and young Mylo Barkley Gunner III's eyes were HUGE when I removed the linearis from the box. I'm sure he thought it was his to play with -fortunately he's pretty good about not getting on the counter so the plant was "safe" initially, but now that it's moved it's free game.....
BTW, the cuttings I took from the EA and put in hydroton are doing great!
Kelly
Glad to hear yours is doing well Kelly. I would love to see a picture of the linearis with fatter lighter green leaves.
EA puts wetting crystals into the medium... I would either NEVER water it or repot it in semi hydro. I tried to buy one but they will only ship to the Continental US. Why does everyone think Hawaii is so different????
I ALWAYS re-pot any EA plant, hoya or otherwise. Their soil is always soaking wet and heavy. I didn't realize they used wetting crystals, never heard of such a thing - no wonder the soil holds so much water the plants are always soggy. Two years ago I started using my own mix of lots of orchid bark, lots of perlite and potting soil. It is very chunky and drains really fast and the plants dry out very quickly which means some plants have to be watered more often, but with our high humidity it works well for me.
I wonder why they won't ship to Hawaii? It can't be shipping fees because they charge the customer for that. Do they have to purchase a phyto certificate to ship to Hawaii? I noticed on the Plant Trading forum yesterday where someone was listing plants they had to trade and they listed a few states they would not ship to because of strict agri laws about plants entering those states. I just found her posting, she is in Florida and I see Hawaii is one state she refused shipping to: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/918425/
There are lots of urban legends about shipping to Hawaii and people aren't smart enough to verify them...they just believe what they read/hear. Sad. One company in Texas wanted to charge me an EXTRA 27$ to ship a tiny piece of yard art to Hawaii because. "Because" was the answer. Hello?
LOL, people never cease to amaze me!
Hawaii Dept. of Agriculture -
http://hawaii.gov/hdoa/Info/doa_importing
Well, after trying to follow the rules when I first got here...and have Hawaiian Ag. inspect my incoming plants....I gave up. They sent me to USDA, USDA sent me back to HA and finally I gave up. If plants come in from abroad, yes an Import Permit is needed. To ship to Hawaii from the mainland...just a box with a label. If you bring them into the Islands by Air, Hawaiian Ag. inspects them.
Dealing with the gov is no picnic I'm sure. Never is. Your islands are so special, AlohaHoya, and there must be a huge concern for importing insects, disease, etc. The only plants I have ever shipped to Hawaii were some episcia stolons (no roots or soil) to a guy named Gary in Hilo.
For the dangers involved in our tiny fragile ecosystem, the rules are there, but no teeth in them. Yet there are tons of regulations for US to send plants OUT of Hawaii. Figure that one!!!
I have shipped quite a few boxes of hoyas, in their pots, to a bidder in Hawaii...with no delays or problems yet?
I usually label the box "FRAGILE" PLANTS...so far no inspection to my knowledge.
I visited Hawaii many years ago and leaving the islands I transpoted many orchids which were permitted only because they are NOT grown in soil. Seems a bit backwards to me too.
Hey, Joni!!! Glad to see you here....YAY!!!
(Hey guys...SRQ is a terrific grower of hoyas!!!)
OOOOOops, I didn't say that...really...no commercial thought intended....errrrrrr. ;>)
LOL Carol, you didn't say seller, you said grower! ^_^
