Fragrant Pansy

Radford, VA(Zone 7a)

I was surprised to find a beautiful & fragrant pansy (tasty too!)-was I just clueless before? Is it not such a rare thing?

OOoohhh this I did not know about...now I've got to go a-sniffin' pansy's early spring...can't do any planting this late in the season..too busy hauling everything in and figuring out where to put them...ugh

I always wondered where 'Middle of VA' was. ; )
I'm growing mine indoors. This particular variety is 'Flirty Skirts Burgundy' from Park Seeds. They didn't even describe them as fragrant-go figure!

"middle of VA" is somewhere north of Richmond and south of Northern VA...like that? LOL
Very pretty colors...what's the scent comparable to?

Radford, VA(Zone 7a)

ok--not too far from here!
. . . sweet . . . ? . . . maybe a bit fruity . . . ? I don't know how to describe it! You have to have about 6 of them together (makes a nice little pot) to notice. I kept smelling this sweet smell in my 'greenhouse' last winter when I watered and couldn't figure out what it was--so the scent does travel a couple of feet if you have 6 or more. VERY pleasant though.

Love the name! They're pretty too! Did you start them from seed? If so, was it easy?

Radford, VA(Zone 7a)

yes, I started them from (Park's) seeds. It was easy, I just had to start them in a cool place. The second batch I started in the summer. I didn't get quite as good germination with them, but since there was no cool place, I put them in the refrigerator each night until they'd all sprouted.

I thought all pansies were fragrant, a sweet fragrance. I plant a lot of the Antique Shades and have always notice a fragrance with them, especially on warm spring days.

Oh. I wondered if it was something I just hadn't been aware of.

I had no idea they had a fragrance either. I might try some this spring.

I think you'll like them. I grow mine indoors and the flowers are edible too. They are pretty tasty. They can also be used as a pretty garnish. Haven't tried it yet, but I've thought of garnishing a glass of ice water that way, instead of with the traditional lemon slice.

I've seen them with a sugar coating. Very pretty. I've never tasted one tho. I think it would be neat as a garnish. DH brough me in the last Johnny Jump Up and I put it in a tiny jar in the fridge. (Cats would eat it.) I love to see it every time I open the door :o)

I finally just got brave and tried one

ROTFL!!! That was me and nasturtiums many years ago.
