A question about temps and freezing

Sunset Beach, NC(Zone 8a)

I have a dumb question ..........

If the weather forecast for temperature says it will be 39, but it says "feels like" 31 degrees, do I need to worry about something freezing? I'm trying to decide if I should go outside and get cuttings from by brugs. A couple of huge ones are so ready to pop with all the blooms that I hate the thought of losing them. What do you think?

Thanks for your help,
Barbara

Barbara: I think I recall reading that the "feels like" temp only applies to people. That plants don't get "wind chill". On the other hand, I know nothing about brugs, so There ya go. For what it's worth.

The ground is still very warm too. I wouldn't worry. That feels like thing is from the wind if you stand naked outside. LOL. Plants don't give off heat like people.

Thanks! I promise not to stand naked outside -- that would surely kill the brugs!

My forecast tonight says, 'patchy frost, 34 F'! I'm not happy. :(

"Weatherbug" just popped up with...get this...a FREEZE watch! That's a month early for us in Dorchester Co.

Seabrook, SC(Zone 8b)

Yes, about a month early for us, too. Usually I don't start worry until Thanksgiving. Figures- my brugmansia is in full bloom after getting chomped on all summer. Grumble, grumble.

Jenny, I passed your road this morning around 7 and the car thermometer said a chilly 36. Brrrrrrr

I have one of those time/temperature things that projects on the ceiling- it makes it very hard to get up in the morning when you're all nice and comfy cozy and realize how cold it is outside.

A very frosty morning here after big warnings for frost/freeze watch for *tomorrow* morn:( See the blooming thread for pics.

I usually don't have to go through the "mad scramble" to make cuttings/ harvest seeds/ move everything into the greenhouse until late November, sometimes mid-December. Been "scrambling" the last 2 days, and it's done. And it would appear, just in time! Where's Al Gore when you need him?

Where did fall go?

Seriously, I was hoping for a mild winter (may still be if NOAA's right), but this is insane. It's like January in October already. It was cold here all day today.

Got a few cuttings last night and I think I'm going out now to get a few more! What's with this weather so cold this early!?

Just one of these early fronts coming out of Canada bc of where the jet stream is. Just like the last freeze back in April around the 15th. A real annoyance, that's for sure.

Well, I did the deed. It just killed me to cut Maya and the Dr. Suess -- both were loaded with blooms. But several branched got whacked last night and I know tonight is worse so I went ahead and got them. The photo is of the one branch I brought in last night. Tonight I brought in a couple more as I've promised them to someone so she really got whacked. I left one long branch for Mother Nature to have. You only see a few things in the photo as another section of the garage is filled with more bananas, plumies, angel trumpets, etc. etc.

Since I brought in cuttings of Mountain Magic last night, I detect from the blooms a little bit of a scent that smells like bug spray -- like termite spray. Anyone ever experienced that??

Well.......... here's to Spring coming early (lifting glass of wine).

I'll join you in that toast. LOL, and someone told me in HI once that smelling brugs was toxic. If that were true I'd have been gone a long time ago.
