Disease on my Perennial Hibiscus

Newport, NC

My Hib has small red spots, resembling rust on the leaves. What would this be, please?

Sorry, no photos, but could it be rust?

It could be but there are other leaf spot diseases too which is why a picture would be helpful. There are other plants in the same family as hibiscus that tend to be susceptible to rust so I guess they could get it too, but I haven't seen too many people complain about it being a problem with hibiscus, that's why I wondered if it might not be something else. Do the spots rub off? If they do then it is probably rust but if they don't then it's another leaf spot disease. The good news is most of those things are unsightly but not fatal, unfortunately though they're usually kind of hard to treat once the symptoms show up, preventative spraying usually works better. Also make sure if any leaves with spots fall off that you pick them up and throw them away rather than leaving them there, that'll help keep the problem from coming back next year.

Thanks for the advice, ecrane3. I will do that.

That's so true ecrane about keeping things clean/picked up around plants. It makes a huge difference when it comes to avoiding and eliminating plant problems.
