ok, for a long time now(about 5 years or so)i have considered moveing up from being a cockatiel breeder to getting dove's and possible pigeons for breeding. but i never thought mike would let me,lol. for at least a year now i've been watching eggbid looking at all the beautiful and unique birds and we have been discussing getting some if i downsize my tiel breeders. my favs i have seen so far are fancy pigeons but i do love dove's also(he'd like to get a pair of diamonds). i love the jaconins, fantails, frillbacks and there was another i saw the other day and can't think of it. there is so many it is hard to choose, lol.
so i want to know those of u that raise either or both dove's and pigeons what breeds/colors do u have? we would love for u to share pics with us with what breed they r listed cause alot of them we still don't know, some i do but he has no clue, lol. we'd love to know why u chose that breed and what the calls r like and anything else u might want to share with us. we'd love ur expertise to help us decide which ones would be right for us to add as new family members sometime in the near futer.
thanks and can't wait to see ur babies and hear about them!!
silkie
who raises pigeons and dove's??
Hello Silkie I raise both pigeons and doves i'm suprised you haven't seen my threads.
I have posted repeatedly about my doves and pigeons. I have 3 kinds of pigeons and raise doves in about several colors and recently got 2 pairs of diamond doves.
I would be more than happy to share anything you need to know but it is late and i will be heading to bed shortly.
I will be back here tomarrow and will catch up with you then until then look up my pigeon threads and doves too they are here somewhere
**Harmony**
i knew u raised pigeons but didn't know u did doves. i have seen a few people do but haven't had time to read them yet or see who the others r. i think claire is one that raises them also if i remember right.
i tried to read them but my pills kicked in, i'm to looped to stay up, lmao and my contacts keep blurring. i'll try to find the threads tomarrow and read them but i wanted to know like personal opinions on what u all raised if that makes sence. like ups and downs of raiseing them and why u chose certain breeds and if u'd reccomend them and why.
thanks,
silkie
i hatch them but i dont keep them LOL
Silkie i have Doves in Tangerine pearl, Tangerine pied, Pure white, Wild, Rosey, Ash, some of these are crosses. If you will tell me which of these you will be breeding i can post a picture of them.
You can also go to dovepage.com and all the breeds are on there plus information on them.
Pigeons i have German Shield Owls i prefer these because they are very people friendly if you raise them and handle them they become very attached to you.
I also have white fantails and they are people friendly too.
I have one Arc Angel and he is beautiful but these are very flighty and are not people friendly.
I really want some figurita's they are very small colorful pigeons.
Try out global pigeon they also have a good pigeon site
I feed all my birds a basic bird seed mix i buy a 40lb bag of mixed bird seed and add a 7lb bag of safflower.
You can feed pigeons pigeon chow which is pellets or feed them pigeon feed........I use the seed mix because it's less expensive than buying 2 different kinds of feed.
Any questions feel free to ask.
Heres a site i just found on pigeon raceing and it's good http://www.pigeonnews.tv/
Here's the link to the Dove Page http://www.dovepage.com/
Silkiechick - I just got my first 4 pigeons and have never raised them so I am new to it. I got them because I went to get some chickens and this guy who was selling the chickens had pigeons for sale too - roller pigeons. I thought his chickens were in excellent condition and well cared for, so I decided to get 2 pairs of his pigeons also. It was a little bit of an impulse buy because I had only intended to get chickens but I had been thinking about expanding into pigeons. I would really like to get some of the German shield owls that Harmony has. Maybe one day I will be lucky enough to meet her and buy a pair! In the meantime, I'm just starting out!
hey moxon do you still have that racing pigeon that flew in or did it leave
Hi Josh, it left. :-( It was here for about 3 weeks but I never put it in a pen. Didn't seem right. So I kept giving it food and water, but one day it just didn't come back. Maybe it went home to Chicago. I don't know...but I hope it's doing well!
Heres a site for different nest for pigeons and doves and FYI i tried the plastic feeders and bowls for nest and the pigeons and doves slide on the slick bottom and busted thier eggs.
The wicker and wooden ones are the best i like the milk jug and have never seen that but i wonder if it will be slick?

Look at this it tells how to make a cardboard nest i like that pigeons and doves nest get really nasty with poop and i have to change the straw about three times before they leave the nest.
This looks real good just have a bunch of these and replace the whole nest NO cleaning YES!

Heres breeding cages. http://internationaldovesociety.com/Breedercages.htm
Great links Harmony - I like the cardboard nest - it's recyclable when you're done with it!
I have learned so much from this site and i learned i been calling one of my doves the wrong breed.
I can't figure out some of those breeds they kind of look the same oh well at least now i know i have tangerine's.
