Don't listen to your neighbor and hang a fly strip in the coop. EVER.
Guaranteed that one of the babiez will fly up and get stuck.. then rip it off the nail.. run around squawking and shreeking jump on my head the minute I open the door.. scratch the daylights out of me.. and then the rest took their turn slapping my silly as they panic and flew the coop. LOL I finally caught her..
I freaked out too.. cause she was picking at her feathers EATING the sticky stuff! I hope she is gonna be okay.. I'm just worried sick..
I had to cut feathers off her bottom and wing.. I had to cut some really close.. I just pray she is okay. I got it all off so she won't eat anymore of it.
I learned something new today
i have had cats and cockatiels get in them dang things. if it happens again don't cut feathers use all purpose flour and cover the sticky. add more flour as u pull it off to cover more sticky. works like a charm and they will clean the last of it over time off themselves. it makes it 10 times eaier on both of ya and less mess believe it or not.
Thank you Silkiechick! I was so freaked out about her eating it! Not to mention feeling stupid.. LOL
rotfl, no it will not hurt them just the ripping it out part of it but with the flour it kinda rolls it off of them rather than rip it off. omg girl u have no idea, lmao stupid would be my blonde moments with them, lol.
i had a cockatiel fly right into one once and it stuck from beak to tip of tail on the whole underside AND had both insides of wings stuck to it. unfortunately it was before i learned the flour trick, lmao. poor cooter was sticky for mths no matter what i tried, he had to get the rest off himself and moult to loose it all and always stuck to things. i felt so bad but had forgot it was up and he escaped from his cage he always opened the doors on his own. ever since i use caribeeners or key locks for the doors, dang near everyone of them is an escape artist, lol.
i've had it happen many times unfortunately. my coops r 3-4ft off the grounds so i hang them under runs or between the back of the coop doors from the roof over lap. i think next year i will try the rope looking sting roll thing rather than the regular fly strips cause wind can blow them alot and if ur not watching u walk into them.
I hang them from the trees near the coop--so far I am the only one who as gotten stuck.
LOL.... I swear, Chicken owners go through more than any hobby I've ever had..
That was the funniest thing I ever saw yesterday.. (Not the chicken, my son) of course, now that it's over and I don't have to be afraid my chicken is gonna die.
All this happened at dusk when they were going in for bedtime.. When I finally caught her, Cody was helping me hold her and one of the others jumped on his head and proceeded to take a big poop down the side of his head... This kid can't wipe up poop if it was on his chest! He is gagging and ducking while another one jumps up on him and snuggles under his hair behind his ear.. The kid melts into laughter.. squashing the chicken I'm working on.. He gets the shivers and is laughing his head off.... he is in some weird folded position on the ground while I'm yelling at him to hold still.. he is squashing the chicken!!! I finally get all the sticky stuff cut off and had to cut wing and butt fluff off..
Then we rounded them up and came in to shower.. Cody was first.. LOL
Here at OCD farms, we love our chickens..
lol, i can just see it. my 5 yr old grandson helps me with the chickens and he would have died if one pooped on his head. I am in tears here. He is my chicken catcher, he can catch the fastest one real easy. I will remember the flour next summer. I buy the fly strips that are in tubes or jugs so not to much of a chance to get stuck to one.
