chicken with a dog bite

Dallas, TX

Hi yall! long time no talk as I've been just over my head busy here but I really need yalls help.

A dog got one of my girls just for a second before I could pull her away. He made 2 holes in her on her right side. I cleaned them with soap and water and put an antibac wound cream for animals on them. Neither are bleeding much but the second hole is worrisome. Its close to her vent and its about a 1/2 in. I worry it wont close on its own.
Any advice or past experiences would be great.
Also shes favoring her foot and wing on that side of her body but I can find nothing wrong with them. Am I missing something?
I have her isolated in a pen so the others wont pick on her and she wont be too mobile. Shes not laying as of yet but will be in another 4-6 weeks.

Cleaning and treating with antibiotic should be fine. Chickens heal really fast and unless awound is deep, gaping and bleeding copiously, they usually don't need stiching. I'd reapply the antibiotic ointment for a few days until healing starts. If you can't find anything with the wing and leg, my guess would be muscle bruising or strain. As long as she is eating and acting fairly normal, I wouldn't worry. Give her a little time to get over it and she should be fine.

Thank you for your reply!
She is doing much better and her wound seems to be healing well, so I will keep my fingers crossed. shes still hopping around a bit, but I can tell thats even getting better.

I'm glad she is recovering. She may be jumpy for a while though. Chickens hold grudges.

About a year ago, we had a problem with a fox getting in the yard and taking chickens and ducks. We tried live traps to no avail. Finialy, I closed up all the holes in the fencing, but one in the direction I assumed that it was coming from. I built an enclosure out of hog panels (to keep any dogs and cats out) and set several leg hold traps (even though I hate them, but I was desperate). To lure the fox direcly to that area, I put a hen in a cage just out of reach of the tethered traps. It took all day to plan out and set up and then about midnight it started to rain. Unfortunately, I didn't notice till the next morning. By dawn, the fox was in the traps and my husband dispatched it, but didn't have time to bury it before work. I went out a little later to take care of it and put the hen back in the coop.

Let's just say, she was a little upset. Though she was quiet as can be in the cage, as soon as I picked her up she squawked and pecked me and tried to claw all the way back to the coop. I'm not sure if she was that angry at being used for bait or for being left out in the rain, but she didn't forgive me for MONTHS. Every time I would go out to the coop, she would squawk and run the other way. Anyone else was OK in her book, but not me. Even a year later, she still turns her back and won't look at me.

Chickens seem to never forget and they do hold a grudge's and i've been snubbed by them too.

I had a hen laying a egg every other day her name was peggy and everyday i would take out the egg and she would get up on the box and watch and glare at me.
So one day i missed collecting and came to get them the next day and there she was glareing at me but today she did something different she dropped her head as if she was sad and turned and walked away. I felt so bad that when she went broody i put them all back under her and even added enough to make 10 she hatched them all and was happy. But still when i would come up to the pen she would call her bitty's to get under her and just stand there glareing at me as if to say i still remember what you did.

ROTFL
Those are some great stories! I definatley did not know chickens would have so much personality when I first got them. But it is a hoot! They never stop surprising me.
Shes a bit weary of me no doubt. The other girls still come up to be and let me hold them but Miss Priss (I have to admit shes always been a bit of a drama queen - hence the name) likes to puff up her feathers at me and make her aggrevated noises. And when I have to apply her medication she is just at the height of impatience.

Lol well glad to know its not just her little prissy butt.
