Welcome the SUPER SEVEN Serama babies to our little family here. This hatch may not have had a happy ending if it weren't for all the help I got on this board. I can't tell you how torn I was about pulling these from under their broody mammas. According to our records (in our head!), they were set to hatch about the day that I pulled them, October 14, 2008. Millie REALLY began setting on 9/26, and Myrtle a few days after.
The girls were so wonderful...sometimes laying in the box together and sometimes taking turns. Even Gibson wanted in on it, trying to climb in and set with Millie (his true love!) So on October 14 (Day 18), you can imagine how hard it was for me to take them after they had worked so hard. They had layed eggs before, that hatched in bator, but had never gone broody and layed on them.
By Saturday night, October 18 (day 22) my son said, "Mom, don't you think we should throw them out by tomorrow? I sadly pondered it, but I candled them. They were so full, I couldn't see much, but the air sacs were so perfect and NOTHING looked wrong! So, I thought, I am going to give it a day or 2, to see what happens.
(Pause here - Can you believe I didn't run to the board for everyone's opinion??!! I managed to make a decision all by my lonesome!)
Sunday rolls along and nothing had happened. By Sunday evening, I had that thought, a watched pot never boils. Went to work on the other side of the house (I work at home a lot on the computer). Went into the kitchen, next to the brooder room, and I heard "younger" chirping. HELLO! There it was - a pip in 1 of the SUPER SEVEN SERAMA eggs!
I was sooooo eggcited, I yelled, WE GOT ONE! I thought to myself that if just 1 survived this mess of stress, I would be thankful.
Within an hour, DUCKY hatched, and by the time she was 1/2 way through another on the other side of the 'bator had been pipping and I didn't even know it...there's 2.
2 didn't come out until the Oct 21 (Tues another blonde) and 3 within a couple hours after (an extended black w/ the most amazing built-in EGYPTIAN eyeliner, or racoon eyes, DH appropriately named "Coon".). So we're into Tues with 3 babies so far and 4 was born that night (another blonde), 5 was born Wed morning (another blonde) and 6 (another extended black) was born later. I'm eggstatic, except for during all this glory, I find that bloody poo in the cochin/frizzle brooder. Pics of that and back on the board to display and get some answers.
Then back to the hatching babies. But, 7 had been pipped since 10/20. She tweeted and wiggled, but only had that little pip. By 10/22 in the evening, I was watching #7 and tweeting back and every so often scratching at the bator to make sure she/he was still alive.
I went to bed that night thinking, well, at least 6 survived...that's amazing. If she doesn't hatch, I'll know it just wasn't meant to be.
NOT. I couldn't sleep that night. By 4:30am, I had to get up and make sure all the babies were OK and see if I would awake to a little "popcorn" out in the bator. No such luck. Same little pip...that's it. Then....she tweeted and wiggled again. I tweeted and she did it back and put the tip of her beak out the little pipped hole.
"That's it", I thought. This is going to be "one of those times". One of those times where I had to make a snap decision on whether or not to help a chick out of it's egg. I had to make this decision on 10/10 when Cleo and her sibling pipped. Cleo hatched and the other egg had only pipped a small hole. When it stopped moving, I knew it was dead...I just knew. When I opened up Cleo's sibling, she was fully formed and had internally pipped...just ran out of steam or something. She was quite large and butted up against the egg, though.
This time, I would try to see if I could help. I decided to pick a little off around the pip and see if she'd do the rest. But when I started picking I realized how dry the shell was and hard for EVEN ME to pick...and the lining was dry and shrunk a little. I picked until there was a little top hat, and pulled that off. There she was, tired, but alive.
I quickly put the bator lid back on and felt SO GUILTY! I did what I tell people never to do!!! Now, I know that it's up to you to make that call, in every different situation. I told her that was it, she needed to the rest so she could have big muscles (sheesh, that sounds so corny..what can I say?). And she did! She proceeded to rest up a bit, then a big burst of energy and "BAM", off went the bottom 2/3 of the shell. She was out, and she was alive, and she was breathing...AND SHE WAS DRY! Not wet, like usual, but nearly fluffed up! It was right then when I knew I had done the right thing. I could have let her try and possibly die, or I could help. Either way, the worst that could happen was she wouldn't make it. Except, if I didn't try, and she DID die, I'd always wonder what would have happened if I just helped a LITTLE?
QiJi is the littlest of them all, but the spunkiest and the cutest. She has this little feather that sticks up on her head (like Alfalfa from Little Rascals). It has stuck up since the day she hatched. I've attached her picture, but dedicated a page on my website to the Super Seven Seramas that survived SO much before they were even born!
Here is the link to my page. Best way to view is to click on "view as slideshow".

oh man....good for you! That's a huge feat. They say the best time to quit is when you are sick! Imagine how many more chickies you could buy with the money you'd normally buy smokes with!
Keep it up :) and THANK YOU for the compliments on the new brood.

Exsmoker here it is totaly worth every aggravating minute of it trust me when i say you will be happier and healthier than you thought you could ever be.
The time i use to take smokeing i spent with my son or gardening a good trick i learned was when i was wanting to smoke or was nervous i quickly found something to do keeping my mind and my hands busy really helped.
(newbie here).
Adorable pics! I love seramas. My Moma has a few and they are the sweetest chickens. I can't wait until I can have some of my own. I live in an apartment and I don't think my neighbors would appreciate it. LOL.
Awww...thanks. Your moma is a very smart woman! y'know what though? That's the great thing about Seramas; you can keep them in apartment! They do great in large fish aquariums or pet crates, or those pet taxis. And my hens are very quiet when they aren't with Mr. Gibson. So, you could start by just getting a baby girl chick or pullet. I've even heard of people training to "go potty" in a cat litter box!
Remember, #1 pet in Malaysia!

No way Music!
That is so cool. I hadn't even thought about that. Thanks for the great idea!
Now... I wonder if my roomie would kill me if I brought home a chicken... :D
It's not a chicken...it's a SERAMA! A decorative bird. haha.
You are welcome,

This may be JUST who you need to talk to:
http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/squeaky_bantam_roosters/
He is trying to breed SQUEAKY BANTAMS. It's a great idea! And might be fun for you to get involved in, too.
BTW WELCOME TO DG!!

The attempt to breed smaller and smaller chickens produce's genetic defects such is found in some small dog breeds.
I do not condone this process in an attempt to produce a chicken that is apartment size it is not apropriate to design something that fits unnatural standards as the animal is the one that suffers.
If you are not allowed chickens then you should except that fact.
I have experience in this and have seen the outcome of chickens hatched with small hearts that live very short lives or stunted wings or legs and some are infertile.
A chicken is and outdoor animal and doe's not belong in small crate's where it sits in it's own poop or confined to a glass fish aquarium.
In my opinion confineing a chicken to these circumstances is cruel and breeding to get pocket size squeeky chickens the same.
The practice of this can only lead to the animal shelters being over run with little pet chickens from people that decide they are to messy or just isn't that cute anymore or some kid gets salmonella from chicken poop and his parents want all chickens banned.
Remember the pot bellied pigs craze and how cute they WERE or how about all those cute monkeys in rescue centers.
So I'm against this and as moxon said i don't get up on my soap box often but for this i will.
Silenceing a rooster so it can't be heard why take his voice from him?
i have seramas as small as AA's and as big as small c's.there is nothing wrong with them and they r perfectly healthy just tiny boys and girls. all r apartment sized to be honest they r all smaller than an oegb and a sebright which r basically they same thng,
Silkie i was speaking of small chickens becomeing a novelty item and like so many other novelty pets ending up in shelters, abused or abandoned.
I don't feel chickens should be in apartments in crates or aquariums.
I know seramas are small and that it is natural and normal occurring for that breed but they are still chickens and deserve to live as a chicken.
I have witnessed first hand the attempts of others to breed smaller and smaller chickens and i have seen the outcome.
Yes...but you could say the same about pet birds, (parrots, cockatoos, tiels, etc.)
We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.
Seramas were bred to be indoors and outdoors in Malaysia. They are gentle, and imho have such different personalities than may chickens. My son brings his Serama in every day (that is before the pox). He started doing this, when Sushi was beign shunned and bullied by the 3 other Seramas.
He didn't train him to, but sushi LOVES to climb up and sit on his shoulder. Sushi does something new on his own all the time that just takes us aback and makes me go, "WHOA". He is so smart and loves to be treated that way. Sushi has trained Kevin the sounds he makes to get food and water, treats, and he (like Russia, our silkie) love to nuzzle on the fleece blanket in our hair. It's just precious.
But, like I say, everone has a different opinion and that's what makes the world go 'round.

Hey Harmony. I understand where you are coming from, but I am not talking about having "pet" chickens during a craze. My mother has had chickens for YEARS, and I want to have chickens too. Not just cause they are cute (which they are), but because I think they are awesome little critters to have around. You better believe when I decide to get chickens, I will not go into it lightly. I value animals as more than a "fad".
Anyway. Music, I agree with you. I think it is all a matter of preference. You could go as far as to compare it to dogs too. Many people feel passionately about having dogs either only inside or only outside.
So do you have any more pics of your babies? :)
Hey Music, how are the babies doing? Hope they are all well! I just had 2 nankins hatch this morning - cute little things! So tiny, I never had any that tiny before.
I see so many novelty pets I have taken in numerous pet rabbits and had people beg me to take Hamsters and Guinea Pigs.
I have taken in pet chickens with their own poop matted to their feet from standing in it all day and so emaciated from eating bread, cookies, cereal and sick from eating their own poop. I have been offered parrots and other caged birds just had a man last weekend beg me to take 8 Finches his wife was tired of even had a guy offer me a lizard.
I stopped takeing in certain animals about 5 years ago because they would die or be crazed from confinement.
I still will take in Pigeons and Doves as they are easily rehabilitated and enjoy the freedom of the outdoor pens i have.
So when i'm asked by people looking to buy a chicken will they make good house pet's my answer is always No. If they ask why i tell them chickens can't be potty trained and will poop when and where they fell like it and they can carry salmonella and that can make small children sick if they handle a chicken and put their fingers in their mouth and small roosters can be aggressive.
I would personaly never have a chicken in my house as a pet as they are very nasty and if i won't let my dogs poop in my house why would i let a chicken do it i would never risk my health or my familys.
Bless you Harmony Just bless you, I had the same thing a few weeks ago, can you keep my nanakin in your house, I said HELL no, well it died in my house in a box. I was so upset. I do not want chickens in my house. I did have the babies in the house which that was very controlled.
THANK YOU LUVS! I was begining to think i was the only one who didn't like chickens in the house.
Yes my bittys are in my house when hatched and like yours it is very controled but they go outside by 2 to 3 weeks and stay out.
Chickens and i'am just crazy about them are just so nasty and they just go when the pain hits and i just can't see walking around cleaning up chicken poo this is my house it's not a chicken coop.
I had some beautiful americanas that free ranged my yard never had a problem till they found the porch and just kept pooping on it who wants company to tip toe through that to get to my front door.
OMG the porch, they found mine also, I fixed that real quick, I moved them to the coop real fast.
In my opinion thats ridiculous and wrong i feel for these poor chickens being dressed up like that.
What in the world has gone wrong with people to put a diaper on a chicken.
Sometimes i think folks just have to much time on their hands and everybody who has outside chickens we are the next targets of blamed abuse for in other peoples opinions not properly careing for our chickens.
It has already happened with dogs and cats now we will be next.
Cat thank you for showing me this and i fear it more than think it's amuseing.
I have been told that if if my chickens have and outbreak of avian influenza they will confiscate and kill my birds. How will these be handled?
Well i can Die cause i seen it all now went back and looked again and all the praise over the diapers this is upseting to me to see this happen to a chicken a chicken free little spirits that they are subjected to this and all they want to do is be outside scratchin up some bugs and poopin on the ground and now they got to wear it all day on they butts and sit inside all day while us humans try and get them to be cuddle bugs.................. So sad poor chickens.
I agree.
Thank You Wren!!
I have to follow strict rules set and guidelines by the agriculture dept just to keep my chickens and i could be fined for not following them and lose my chickens and we all are at risk.
We have heard so much about bird flu and i know if it breaks out my chickens are dead and whats happens if this craze takes off and money hungry people capitalize on it and spread disease across the country who would lose out us thats who the ones who guard our flocks and really treat them like chickens should be. It doe's my heart good to hear all the stories of the free range chickens antics and the little chicks scratchin around with they mama and to see the pics of these happy chickens and i want that to continue.
It think it will, the crazies are only a small part of this world. I have seen a number of stupid things come and go. We just have to keep on
That is hilarious and ridiculous!
Thank You Lady it is ridiculous i would have never thought i would have ever seen this.
Well with all this going on i might just look into starting a chicken day care call it Rock-a-bye Bitty daycare for chickens..... I could start a wardrobe line call it fashion feathers boutique.
A snack for chickens call it chickola snacks.
I mean the marketing would be endless a chicken stroller for those walks in the park.
Oh and this would be great a diaper service call it cocka-doodie -doo diaper service
LOL yes endless for sure
i dress my pug and min pin in clothes and my hens in saddles does that make me a bad momma ???
I think a min pin just begs to be dressed. ha!
lol, actually i dress her cause she is always shivering she has a thin coat and is a wimp. that way she is nice and warm and comfy. the pug she is just to cute, i have bandannas for her i got her for halloween, one has lady bugs the other skulls. i've not had time to make her clothes so she doesn't freeze this winter going out to potty. the hens get saddles if the boys start to get to rough and bareback them and also before shows they wear them so the boys don't mess them up before they head to a showing.
