OK, all you experienced Brug folks, here is what is on one of my plants that I grew from a cutting this year....thank you Marian!
I noticed tiny buds a few weeks ago......how much longer until a flower appears? And do the flowers last as long as the buds?
Pam
How long to flower?
I'm more certain about how long they last — from 3 - 6 days depending on the weather. It will still be a few weeks before the buds open. You may want to protect it tomorrow night. Forecast is for temperatures in the 30s (35º for my area). I'm going to have to dig out the frost blankets as my greenhouse is not ready to receive plants (sprayed for Bermuda grass last week).
At night, take a flashlight out to the plant and hold it behind a bud. You can then see inside the calyx, housing the flower. If the flower is not grown down toward the tip, it will be a while, If it is down toward the tip of the calyx, just keep watching. A few days makes a big difference and soon you will see the tendrils start peeking out. However, when the weather cools, blooming isn't as fast and generally not as colorful. I always enjoyed the anticipation of new blooms. I think I would go out a dozen times a day and wish those new buds to open quickly or I was surely going to die. LOL!
Brugie, I'll have to remember that tip with the flashlight. Chances are I'll be so excited, I'm liable to forget.
What an excellent chance for a "pool".I say 14 days to open bloom.Good tip about the flashlight.
Well, I'll be, I can see it. I have one bloom where the tendrils just poked out, I'm so excited, my first brug bloom ever! I hope it will open all the way, but temps in 30's here tomorrow night. Keeping fingers crossed. ***
Wow, halway there!!! You must be very excited, Pam.
Davis, we're expecting temperature in the 30s as well. I have to wait another week before I can get my Brugs in the greenhouse so I'm going to be out there tomorrow with frost blankets covering Brugs and Plumerias
We are supposed to get colder tonight.......I will move these out of harms way.
Do they always bloom this late in the season? I have over 20 buds (I counted) on one plant, although all not as big as the one I put the flashlight on. I want them to bloom!!!! And then I want to sit on the patio and enjoy the scent. So I would prefer they bloom in the spring or late summer.
Oh well.......anyway, Do I chop them down to put in greenhouse? They are not very tall....about 3 feet. Next spring I was considering putting them in the ground by our pool. I hear they can get very tall....maybe 12 feet....but perhaps that is in a different zone.
From your description, you must have started out with cuttings early this year. In zone 8b, they will die down to ground level when planted outdoors so essentially they would have to start from scratch — vegetative growth and forming first "Y" before blooming. However, given good care, they will return to produce bigger plants each year, but not 12 footers. You could expect several flushes. If you left some in pots, and overwintered the pots in your greenhouse without pruning below the first "Y", you will see blooms sooner.
If there is room in the greenhouse without pruning them, don't prune until spring when you take them out. In our area, they don't go dormant, but continue to grow at a slower rate. You stand a good chance of seeing blooms this winter.
We're going to need a bigger greenhouse!
:-)
bettydee, when you say frost blankets, can that be old sheets or is there an actual product called that?
Davis, They are called Plankets and sold at Home Depot. I was rather disappointed in the product because it isn't very effective even against barely freezing temperatures, but it is waterproof. I used them for the first time last year. This year I plan to use some burlap and old sheets underneath the Plankets to see if it helps. I gave our old blankets and towels to the local animal shelter so I was thinking of going to a thrift shop to see if I could find something I could use as well.
Pam, it's surprising how quickly greenhouses fill up. LOL.
Cool! It won't be much longer. Can't wait to see who this is. LOL!
We'll have perfect Brug growing weather for at least a week. Did the cutting come with a name?
Yes, I think it's called Milk and Honey. Supposed to be white.
How exciting. Keep posting pics , please, it like watching a new baby being born.
brugie. Thanks for that tip and writing it down in my book too.
Claping loudly!!!!!!!! Congrats on the new baby. : ) Are ya apassing out the cigars yet? Was fun watching it take shape and the birthign process. Appreciate ya taking the time out to do it and carry us right along with you. : ) Can't wait til next year when hopefully I will get see me my first one.
Congrats Morgan, she is beautiful!!
She's beautiful alright, congrats! Mine just bloomed too, but I don't notice any fragrance, how about yours? I wonder if it's because of the colder weather?
She's hugemongously beautiful! LOL
Morgan, you have to catch her fragrance at night. I was still out watering my Brugs last night around 8:30PM. My Audrey Hepburn is loaded with buds and has two open blooms. When I started watering at 7:00PM, I had to stick my nose in the flower before I could smell it. By 8:30PM, I could smell the fragrance from those two blooms from 15' away. Your Brug's shape is one of my favorites. Has she remained that lovely creamy color?
Does the name 'Super Nova' ring a bell?
