more about seedballs

San Antonio, TX

I would love to hear about seedballs. I love the idea of protecting the seeds from birds and other critters in my yard. Thank you!

They are actually a very old method of planting. They are about the size of malt balls and are a mixture of clay, compost, and seeds. The clay protects the seeds from the elements and from the birds. They need very little care. They are used at a rate of 1 per square foot and can be used anywhere but are great for areas that you want to naturalize. They don't need to be buried just thrown out, the rain and sunshine will do the rest.

I like this idea but what about the squirrels....will they leave them alone, I have so many in my yard!

They look like dirt balls so I don't know if the squirrels would be interested. The squirrels here don't pay any attention to them but they have a lot of other things to feed on. I have heard that if squirrels are a concern it is best to bury the ball in the ground slightly don't cover it.
