Sugar Apple

Bryan, TX(Zone 8b)

I wanted to know if anyone one in Texas is growing the Sugar Apple tree. I read about in Dave's blog but the only ones I can find to buy are in Florida. I'm in Bryan, zone8b.

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

According to what I have been able to find, Sugar Apple trees (Annona squamosa) grow to a height of 10 - 20' depending on cultivar. It is grown in tropical South America .... and sometimes in southern Florida (zone 10b - 35º to 40º minumum). You are 2 full zones away (zone 8b - 15º to 20º minimum). You would have to grow it in a very large pot. Plants that normally grow into large specimens (Even a 10' tree qualifies as large.) don't thrive in pots. You should be aware of what you are getting into. Having a good knowledge base will help you anticipate any potential problems you may encounter.

I found some good links for you to look at. Pay particular attention to the Climate requirements.

YOu just saved me from a HUGE mistake :) THANKS!!! They were selling them like crazy in Houston last year and Dave mentioned once that he'd heard about them at our local co-op when he went to a Horticulture thing on trees. I just couldn't remember if he said they would grow here. You are a SUPERSTAR, thanks!!
