Woo-hooo! I'm doing the happy chicken dance!
Wish me luck!
I have:
7 Wheaten or Blue Wheaten
5 Black or Blue Copper
2 Blue
1 Blue Birchen
I was hoping for more Birchens but oh well.
I got these from Bev Davis in Florida.
Unfortunately shes not taking any orders at this time.
Marans hatching eggs arrived this morning!
Beautiful! Can't wait to see the hatch!
Whooohoooo! Did you get them on eBay? Who was the seller? I have some Blue Copper eggs--but they aren't very dark. What fun--so many kinds.....
YAH me too!
I just hope some of them make it.
Fingers, toes, eyes crossed! ;o)
These eggs aren't from ebay or eggbid.
I never buy from online actions.
These were purchased directly from Bev Davis in Florida
http://www.bevsmarans.com/
But like I said shes not taking any orders at this time nor is
she taking wait list requests at this time.
Somehow I lucked out and got these.
If I hear of any updates I will let you know.
Okay there for just a minute i was confused when you named all the eggs and i said but they all look alike then i went to the link and my face is red.
DUH there all marans i feel like i need a dunce hat sometimes LOL
Good luck from her site she looks like a kind chicken lady and her chickens are beautiful!
Oh,yes. I forgot you had a good "contact".
Would you like to be my third BBFF?:0)
Oh Catscan, you're so promiscuous with your BFFs....hmpf....
Moxon--you are, and will always be, my FIRST BBFF!
But a girl's gotta get some good eggs, somehow. (How are the Penedesenca doing?)
Don't think harshly of me because I'm an egg "party girl". I am fun while the party lasts!:0)
The penedesenca are well. They were very peepy this morning and excited to chase my fingers. They are quite large for chicks, in my opinion. I can't remember if I said on the other thread but I learned that the partridge come in dark and light, and the light partridge are roo and the dark partridge are hen, which should mean I have 1 of each. Harder to tell with the wheatens. Given that I have 1 of each, I should think your eggie wishes might come true...
Of course the welsummer and cuckoo maran eggs that I got earlier this week are also quite lovely. Yesterday I got light brahma eggs and some silkies (buff & partridge) and they are all in the 'bators. I think my chocolate OEG are at the post office waiting for me. They called me to say I have a package there but it's leaking egg goo. Darn it all....

Moxy did you cuss. I would have never thought that from you LOL. Hopefully it was just shipped with some other eggs someone else bought and that's where the goo is coming from. (really hoping..........)
Sheila
Oops, I guess I did! I meant to say "darn". Ahem.
Fixed it now.
Only trying to give you the business. That is exactly what I would be saying also.
Sheila
Oh My Claire has been a bad girl NO pee_cans for you naughty, naughty gir
I hate you, I hate you, I hate you! (just kidding..I could kinda use a new bbff, too)
I am on Bev's list...like forever have been.
I just received 8 bcm eggs this morning. 1 is broke on the tip, but they are still nice.
Excited to finally have Marans eggs in my hands :) Now, onto the 'bator with positive energies to help them develop :O

I don't have a BF or BFF or even BBFF It was that way in school allways a wallflower and never got to dance (Sigh)
Weeeell ...I will be happy to share IF and when I have some Marans successfully breeding.
Hoping to get at least a trio or pair of the same color in this group. Should have a chance with the Wheatens and maybe the Black Coppers.
Needless to say I'm thrilled for the opportunity to get some eggs
from Bev.
Bev has 2 long time reputable/knowledgable Marans breeders on her link page for you fickle BFF that need some NOW. ;o)
Don't know if they sell eggs or birds but might be worth looking into.
I am very faithful as long as you have what I want.:0)
Harmony--it is easy to be my BBFF--just offer something I REALLY, REALLY want.
Moxon with her Penedesenca, CajuninKY with spicy cajun food and now Cottage_Rose with the Marans. ......Can one have too many BBFF? Could I be spreading myself a little thin? Nah.

I have other things too...
have you been to my website?
http://www.freewebs.com/cottage_rose_birdsnblossoms/
Hmmmm...if I tell you that my 8 that I just received came from Wade Jeane, THEN do I have a chance for BBFFism? We could make beautiful babies together!!

Oh Cottage Rose, you send us to your lovely website, I get all excited about your Ameraucanas, and then down at the bottom of the page it says you don't offer them anymore. That was cruel and unusual. :-P
Harmony, you are my BPF (bestest pigeon friend). :-)
Quote my new BFF: "I get all excited about your Ameraucanas, and then down at the bottom of the page it says you don't offer them anymore. That was cruel and unusual".
Sorry/LOL ;o)
Try John Blehm...order (chicks/no eggs) early.
Music...WHAT do you have from Wade Jeane?
Are they directly from him?
Those eggs you mentioned above? Do tell!

congratulations! I tried to get eggs from her, but like you said she's not taking orders.
I heard via the Marans grapevine that she doesn't like to sell hatching eggs and that her wait list is up to a year long.
never-the-less I emailed her asking if she had any hatching eggs for sale or could I get on her waiting list.
I told her I would take any color and surprisingly she offered me some then ceased to answer any of my replies that YES I wanted some.
I was very frustrated and wasn't sure what was going on but apparently this is her M.O.
Well I about gave up on her when she finally emailed me back her address info and told me to send the money. Well I couldn't get the money in the mail fast enough for fear she would change her mind.
fortunately she didn't and they're here!
This is just a theory but I think some of the big Marans breeders are reluctant to sell to just whoever because of all the hy-jinks that goes on with people with no ethics selling hatching eggs on ebay and eggbid and saying they are from such-and-such big wig line but who knows what they're selling. Its gotta be discouraging for these breeders who put so much time and effort into perfecting a breed to have these yahoo's using their names to make sales.
With some Marans eggs going for up to $300. a dozen you know there are people out there that just see dollar signs.
Did some online searching last night on Marans and everybody and their brother seems to have Marans hatching eggs for sale with a big price tag and they all say stuff like "from Bev Davis, Wade Jeane, Bill Braden lines" etc. etc. so I may not be too far off base in my theory.
I would think the market will soon become so swamped with Marans that the prices will come tumbling down so if you can't afford them now just wait a couple years.
Does anybody know how many Marans are in the US?
Yup.. I think your right CottageRose.. I think it's supply and demand. As soon as the price drops, it will be another breed. :)
i want a BFF :(
Hi Cottage_Rose! I just finished reading your comments concerning Marans and Hatching eggs. First of all I have had a flock of Marans (16) for sometime now. I studied and read so many things and opinions from persons who seemed to have all the answers. Wow ! What and experience, I met a lady in the area who had fifty marans and wanted to sell some to recoupe some of her expenses. She was a first time Marans owner. We agreed to keep contact and exchange info and experiences. I was told that Marans were nice birds but exceptionally flighty. When I got my birds I decided I was going to spend enough time with them to do a true evaluation baised on time spent rather than opinions of others. When I traded info with the lady I'd bought them from she concluded they were flighty, I informed her that my experience was just the opposite, We then traded info on time spent with the birds. Ahaaa. Just as I thought, I had spent about 75% more time with them than she had. She was so moved that she came over to see my flock, she agreed my flock was very docile and happy to be with me. The Marans are as most chickens, beautiful birds, with equally beautiful eggs, but doggone it I would never charge those outrageous prices for hatching eggs and I hope others would refrain from those fraudulent prices as well, comeon there only chickens. I'm watching you Cottage_rose to see how your hatching goes. (well I hope) Haystack P. S. I don't know how to put pic's on the computer or I would show you my beautiful eggs. Someday I'll learn how to do it.........
Haystack
Thanks for sharing your experience. :)
I suppose the prices are high because Marans are a new breed in the US and still somewhat a novelty I suppose.
If you have a pc (not sure how a mac works)
To post a pic in a message simply click on the browse botton under the message body (where you write your message).
A windwo will open up of your computers files.
You then just go to your pictures and find the one you want to post and click on it (the photo) then, click on open.
Give it a try! ;o)
OK...so, yes...I also REFUSE to pay the outrageous prices for eggs. I found a very nice woman (who is not in it for the money) on byc. She sold them to me for $30 incl. shipping (what I offered her for them).
They are in my bator now, and in the meantime a friend and I went in a 7 bmc pullets on eggbid. I got my 3 birds from her Saturday (the day after she received them by express mail) and they are some SICK (I don't mean that in a good way!) birds.
I don't want to return them, because I want to make them better. They are already looking healthier after letting them free range (in a chicken tractor) and giving them sulmet (the were literally squirting blood clots and water from their rears).
I wanted them because of 2 reasons, the dark chocolate eggs, and the French history behind them. After getting more info, I REALLY wanted these birds after I saw how beautiful they were. I only wanted Black or Blue copper Marans at first, but now leaning towards the other colors! ALL OF THEM! Am on Bev's list and happy that she is in FL., as I'd really rather not get any of these eggs/birds through shipment.
You are right, ZZ, it is supply and demand of the darker eggs and the best genetic bloodlines, right now. 2, or so, years, all these eggs and birds (of the quality lines) will be laying their own eggs...then the demand will go down as the supply goes up in various areas.
So, here is a pic of my eggs I received from the nice woman on BYC. They are growing in the bator, as we speak :)

Great eggs! I love the speckling!
Great looking egg's Music_Notes! I'll be following your progress with them. Hope they hatch out well for you. Haystack
I got 24 Delaware eggs today, from an eggbid.com order that was for "12+". Clearly very heavy on the "+" part!!! I am very excited about them. They are a critical breed from the Breed Conservancy list.
http://www.albc-usa.org/cpl/delaware.html
All 24 eggs were intact so we'll see how it goes!
Claire
My Delphine was a Delaware--she was very curious and bold. My most intelligent chicken. Breeders of Delawares comment on that.
Well then, they should get along very well with me, the perpetual student! LOL!
I have about 20 or so Delawares right now, they have been the most hardy of all the chickens so far. They are right at 3 months old.
Love hearing all your comments.
Please more details on the Delawares!
Music...what about the Wade Jeane birds??
Do you have some?
I hear he has the darkest eggs
but not so hot type and Bev D. has better
type but eggs not as dark as Wades.
I know she will only breed from a minimum of #4 eggs..
Heres the thing with Marans...the old timers have told me you lose dark eggs when you cross lines. Apparently you need to have a couple lines closely related and breed from them.
Beautiful eggs! Bev sure does a great job. You will love the blue coppers. They have the best temperament of any of my marans. Her lines are great!
I also wanted to defend Bev Davis a little here. Can you imagine how busy she is with all that she does for the Marans breed? She is on the Marans Chicken Club, she is working very hard with the APA to standardize the breed, she is showing her birds. All that takes a ton of time. I have only spoken with her a few times, but she has always been a mile more helpful than anyone else I have questioned about Marans and she always emails me back, even if it takes a few days.
The eggs I have gotten from her are big, clean and the right color. And, the birds grow up to be quality individuals. In my last hatch, out of 5 roosters, 3-4 are rooster quality! That to me is amazing.
I know she likes to sell her eggs. She has personally told me the importance of spreading the breed and even encourages it. That is a true breeder, not in it for $$. If she didn't like to sell the eggs, she wouldn't, or she would not price them so reasonably. I can see her concern with people saying "Bev Davis Lines" on their ads, when they didn't come from her. I see that all over. Maybe somewhere back in the day, her birds contributed to the stock, but if were crossed with some other lines, they are no longer Bev Davis Lines, they are John Doe's lines. And, just because eggs come from her, doesn't mean the new breeder is necessarily selecting breeding crosses the way Bev would. Marans are different than most breeds in that you have to worry about egg color as well as the conformation of the bird. If people are spreading around that their chickens are Bev Davis' and they are producing a 2 or 3 on the egg chart, well that is a problem for Bev. She won't sell anything that isn't at least a 4 so somewhere the color was diluted.
I know her list is long. Just think, if you get 2-3 dozen eggs a week from any particular variety, you can get a year long list in no time. She is trying to catch up on the list, that is why she stopped taking orders. I don't even advertise my eggs, I haven't ever shipped any of my marans eggs, and I get at least 2-3 emails a week asking about them, sometimes more. Bev must get several hundred a day. Everyone knows her, and everyone wants her eggs. I know people like to beat down the guy (gal) on top, but I think some of the comments above are pretty harsh and downright incorrect. Bev isn't the only breeder this is happening with either. The Marans breeding leaders are really working to better the breed, not become Murray McMurray. We all have to be a little patient and keep waiting until our name comes up on the list.
Just my two cents, which isn't worth a penny.
