What is this bush?

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

This is a gorgeous bush growing down the street from me. I thought it was a duranta, but when I got up close to it, I wasn't sure. It is absolutely covered with violet flowers, and also with hummers and butterflies. Anyone know?

Here is a picture of the bush--looking into the sun, unfortunately, but you can still see its size.

look like some kind of Solanum. Blue potato bush maybe?

Marie, I believe you are exactly right. Thanks for the ID.

That's very interesting. I've seen that bush at some of the big box stores, and really liked it. But I always passed on it because Plant Files says it's not hardy in this zone. But, well, my neighbor has had hers at least 3 years. So maybe next time I won't pass it up.

I do not have one either but they sure are pretty!!

It may be Blue Potato Bush, Paraguay Nightshade, Blue Lycianthes
(Lycianthes rantonnetii, synonym: Solanum rantonnetii) 'Royal Robe' which is the one that is usually sold at nurseries. I have not planted one here because I thought it was not hardy here. I may give it a try too.

I agree with Marie. It's a blue potato "vine". I have one that's several years old now. It blooms off and on throughout the year. It does need some support, like a trellis or arbor. It's not clinging, so you have to tie it up. I've seen a photo of one that was quite old (I think here on Dave's) and the stems were large and woody. It was a beautiful specimen. Mine is not in an ideal location, not enough sun, but it still blooms. I've had no pest or disease problems with it. It's a very easy care plant.

I have had this plant. Mine was a shrub with woody stems. Every winter, it would die down with freezing weather. It was always late coming back in spring. I was always determined to make it bloom earlier but it never failed. It would wait till end of season to deliver the blooms. Finally this spring it gave up the ghost even with the roots well mulched. http://davesgarden.com/community/journals/viewentry/110451/ It has a pretty bloom but I honestly can't say I missed it.
