Best of the whites- Super Nova

Fort Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10b)

As far as the whites go i only keep one single white in my collection and that is Super Nova. Huge pristine white blooms (18-21" long) that remain white throughout the blooming period. Many other whites show tinges of cream or yellow in their blooms but not Super Nova. She has a heavy fragrance, and blooms in huge flushes. In my opinion this is the best "moon flower" brugmansia for any garden.

Wow very nice.

This must be the bloom time for them. I agree it is a great single white.
Here's mine.

Just for fun I took a comparison shot of SN and MEM. I lined up the top of the calyx on the two. MEM has much longer tendrils and a longer actual stem. Otherwise the flower is only a few inches longer than this SN .

Does SN bloom all summer? Or have they just now started blooming? I ask because I have a Pink Beauty that waits until mid-late September to bloom... in my location, sometimes, I'm bringing stuff to the basement around that time. It seems a lot of work and $$ to have it bloom in the basment. So I'm trying to phase her out of my collection. (just can't, she was one of my first) I had a SN my first year with brugs but never saw a bloom and my lack of experience caused it's demise before the next spring.. so I long to have a SN, but if I must feed it all summer to get blooms in the basement, I'll be happy with the Monster White I have that bloomed all spring and summer. Not as big or bright white as SN, but I like the pay off in the garden, not in the basement.

Personally I can't answer that question because I am away all summer and don't really know what blooms during the summer here. most brugs just struggle thru the heat.
This however is my time for EVERYTHING to bloom, super nova included. My blooming season lasts thru April. It usually doesn't start until thanksgiving because of summer neglect, but I have found someone who really cared for my garden while I was away so the blooms are starting 2 months earlier. I have also noticed however that there are a couple of people in the neighborhood (like my landlord) that have super nova and everyone's is in full flush right now.

Well, drat X, I thought you would know.. guess I should just enjoy the blooms wherever I can get them.. but I strip most of the leaves off to bring them in, and they are kind of funny looking with blooms and no leaves.. and don't offer a nice "kodak moment". Some years Pink Beauty is too tall for the ceiling so I have to cut the bloom tips off.. 1 of the reasons I'm trying to get smaller growing brugs.. Congrats on your xtra 2 months!

Personally I know that here Harlot and Vixen can be kept small and yet be loaded with blooms during their flushes. Mem is another that can be kept on a leash and still have nice flushes. When I want to keep a smaller version of a tree that I have growing I will cut the trunk about 2 feet below the primary 'Y' so that I have a thick
hardwood 'Y' cutting to root. That will usually result in a stumpier plant with earlier blooms.

Very interesting...thx X I might do that with PB.. 33 degrees forecast tomorrow night.. I've rooted 7ft cuttings over winter before..... I have Vixen, went from teeny rootling to almost 5/6ft and bloomed this summer.. then I whacked her for cuttings to share..I saved the rootball with a small growth coming back up... I'm loving the growth habits of Antique Lace and Cassie's Curls, both under 4 ft w/ blooms and/or buds.. I'm really amazed at all the different brugs available and the work being done to produce new ones..

Stunning. Looks like a tall cool glass of fresh milk. So bright and white. What does it smell like?

Super Nova brug indeed is big and beautiful single white. I've a small cutting, though it didn't receive the optimal growing condition it deserves. The blooms were more than a surprise delight. Yes, its fragrant is beautiful. Thus far it's the largest trumpet I've seen in all brugs that I've. Now I realized why it was named 'Super'. Does anyone know of its parentage?

Super Nova is a "Native Habitat" creation and they never revealed the crosses of any of the brugs they created and sold. The other brug I have of theirs is Native Habitat Double Peach....Again huge blossoms of a double orangy-peach. They're gorgeous if the plant stops dropping buds long enough to actually bloom.
Super Nova is a completely different story however. She never drops buds and blooms with numerous flushes each season....at least here she does.

Hi Lily Love.. Didn't know ya have brugs too. Looks I am gonan get me a new littlew notebook and start adding brugs to the wish list. LOL

Fort Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10b)

Better get a BIG notebook starlight!!!!

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

LOl looking at th epics, I think your right. Better get pad of notebook paper instead of little spiral binder.

X.. If ya don't mind. Who or what is " Native Habitat"?

Fort Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10b)

Just a company that used to sell brugs out of florida. They were hit by a virus that wiped out their 200 plant inventory. That was a few years ago. They may be back in business but I'm not sure......it's a lesson for many people out there...be careful who you trade with and know the people you buy from.
There are viruses that can wipe out your entire investment in a short period of time.......thank goodness these virulent viruses are rare, but they do exist.

Oh thanks for the warning. I gues s since I gonan try and start and grow brugs, I better do some googling and see just what kind of problems they can have. Very good advice. Appreciate it. : )

Chickenville, FL(Zone 9a)

My SN mostly blooms its big flushes in the fall. MEM will bloom spring, summer, and fall.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Ella, I've a few... One thing with brugs besides their finicky requirement for lots of water, and fertilizer. Double blooming types are harder to raise in our hot humid zone. That said, I did have a double pink that yielded a few blooms for me, and 'Day Dream' is getting ready to reward me with a double blossom.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Thanks for the info, everyone. Hi there Kim, glad I ran into your posts over here.. hope you're having a good Fall.. My little Day Dreams produced a small flush of first blooms a couple weeks ago.. she's a good double and not too finicky, least for me..

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Hi Bonnie, so far so good with my DD, the blooms should show off any day now. :-)

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Oh I hope doubles don't act liek that, I love em. Course I love em all. Singles, doubles, species. Even saw a pic of a triple.

Pensacola, FL(Zone 8b)

well kim you will have to post some pictures of that one for sure.

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Very nice Gary, that's one I've never grown and I like whites. Is her scent just 'brug' or something more? You know me and fragrance, lol.
