Beer Listerine insecticide

Linden, TN

Hi, I am not even sure if I read this in this forum or not, but someplace I read about mixing Coors Beer with Listerine to eliminate varmints from Brug cuttings before bringing them inside... Does anyone have the formula... I have a huge vase full of Brug cuttings, and need to spray them before bringing them in to my sunroom with my other plants...

Can anyone help me here?

Thanks,
Carolyn

Carolyn, I haven't heard of that remedy. What are you trying to kill? Or do you want to spray as a preventative? I prefer to use Neem Oil. It's safe around people and pets (Use outdoors.) and the varmints don't develop a resistance to it. Our you could try dunking the cuttings in warm water, 115º - 120º for 20 minutes. It works against broadmites and probably works against spidermites too. That temperature doesn't harm the cuttings.

Where does one find Neem Oil? What does the bottle look like? Would it be in the garden department, say at Home Depot?
Thanks :)

I was hoping this was going to be a way to rid my brugs of whitefly. Any suggestions? I have heard of using Listerine, and beer for slugs.

Cissy, someone from my hometown! This link is just for reference, but you should be able to find Neem Oil at Home Depot, Lowe's and my favorite box store Orchard Supply. It would be in the garden section where pesticides are kept. Be sure it is 100% neem oil. I like neem oil because it's safe around people and pets, pests don't develop any resistance to it since it kills by suffication, and it's biodegradable. It is a non-specific pesticide so it will kill good bugs as well.

woodspirit, Neem Oil should work against whitefly as well. Be sure to really tget the underside of the leaves, where whiteflies like to hide. Listerine contains alcohol which in high concentrations can damage plants. I don't know how safe it is around dogs and cats. Beer does work. You'll need some shallow containers something like pie tins and bury them so they are the sides of the tins are level with the soil. Slugs and snails are attracted to the beer and will drown. Unless the containers are covered, your pets will help themselves to the beer as well.

I was taking some cutting and want to bring them into the sunroom... but don't want to drag in any undetected varmints along with them.... don't need the entire sunroom infested with varmints...

Neem you say... I will look for it online... HOme Depot and garden centers are about a 60 mile drive.. one way... cheaper to pay postage me thinks...

Thanks,
Carolyn

LOL. Carolyn, you are even more isolated than I am. Home Depot is a 60 mile round trip, but my Jeep is a gas guzzler.

Well now I found Neem oil among other things for the "recipe" that I found in another thread... and all on ebay.. so no running all over the planet to find these..

My Saturn wagon is pretty good on gasoline at just over 25 mpg... probably better on the Interstate....but It takes a day to go there, shop and come back.. .But for less money, I can buy on Ebay and don't have to turn a wheel... Cool huh....

I have read of folks rinsing there cuttings in water with a little Clorox and then again in fresh water. I use that. I got white fly from a cutting someone sent me as I had not seen those pests before and didn't buy any.. Oddly, some of the brugs got them and others were resistant.
Grand Marnier never got a single one. I think Solid Gold was one of the resistant ones.

Clorox should do it you would think eh... I have another question in a different thread..(Brug cuttings) and sure could use some great Brug advice...

I'll try Home Depot....I look at Orchard and they didn't have it. I asked a clerk and they said "neem what?" :D
