Lemongrass question

Dacula, GA(Zone 7b)

I have a pot of lemongrass I want to overwinter, probably in the garage. Can I cut down the foliage, like I would a tender perennial grass, before I move it inside?

Yes, you can cut it. Mine overwinters outdoors because we only have a few nights of freezing temps. The plant goes dormant and all of the leaves turn brown. In the spring new shoots start growing from the center of the plant. When I see these I trim away the dead growth and the plant grows back beautifully. I'd also avoid watering it very much while it's dormant. I'm not sure about how much to water it if you're keeping it indoors so you'll need to find that out from someone else. I water a lot less during the winter, maybe once a week.

Thanks Momherb. I'll try watering about once a week or less, unless it gets very dry. I just don't want the roots to freeze, so I'll keep it in an unheated garage. It can get as low as 35 in there, if its in the 20s outside. This is only for a few hours at most.

I have a big established lemongrass that I've had in the ground over the past several winters. I cut it back in fall and use the leaves over the winter and in spring it grows again. But I've lost smaller plants in the past from freezing.
