So, I guess I should know this by now...but I don't! My daughter put the chickens up last night and didn't collect all of the eggs from the coop, so tonight when I went to collect them, there were a couple of egg-stra :) eggs. I hate to waste all of them because I don't know which are todays and which are yesterdays! Are they still good? How long are the eggs good without being refrigerated? Thanks for your help!
Egg question
They are usually good at least a week without refrigeration--that is about how long the hen would take to build up a clutch before starting incubation. I've eaten eggs that I found almost two weeks after my chicken found a secret hiding place.
So one day should make no difference.
yep easy as pie hey catscan one time i found an egg under all the straw right at the back that had escaped my noticing and cleaning and i reckon it would of been there for a couple of months it was realy bad so (i dont advise to do what i did with this) the person who lives accross from me kept letting his dog out which killed one of my chickens i asked him to keep it in his own yard because dogs like to eat things especialy chickens he said yes but didnt so i got the egg and threw it over the fense and he had a realy nasty smell in his yard after that but he stopped the dog after that.
he just realy ticted me off it killed one of my chooks and he didnt even try and contain it well i taught him. oh and as i said above i wouldnt try that because it is not nice but at least the chooks were safe i say in my defence
How clever and environmentally sensitive of you, Josh, to find such a valid use for rotten eggs. One of my neighbors has thrown beer bottles and white lace thong underwear (don't ask) into my yard--now I have a proper response.
Sonoma,
It should still be good. If you are still concerned you could do a float test... someone help me out here... it floats if its bad or????
if it floats its bad
If it lays flat on the bottom, it's fine. If it stands on it's end, use for cooking or baking. If it floats (gently) discard it. I've kept eggs on the counter two weeks with no problems, but don't wash them first.
Thank you! I had heard about the floating/sinking test but wasn't sure how accurate it was! I guess you can say I'm a little funny about what I eat, it took us almost a month to actually eat one of our chickens eggs!! I kept giving them away. Weird I know, we feed organic feed and fresh veggies so I know they're way better than "store" eggs, but I kept wondering if they would taste funny.
My DH had trouble with his first home-grown egg and I must admit I had a brief qualm myself. It is one thing to buy them in a carton at the store and another to look at the big feathery body that has just produced it and consider where they come from.
But once you start eating them, there is no turning back.
