I've decided that my Silkie, Riley, is going to be a house chicken--at least at night. So she has been sleeping in a small dog carrier in the back hall.
This evening I walked into the living room and saw my Akbash dog, Asgard, eating my last pair of good sandals. I yelled, "No, stop it!" in a very loud deep voice.
Immediately I heard from the back hall this amazing deep chicken yell, almost as loud as my own. Riley kept yelling until I came back and showed her I was okay.
So would she come to my rescue if I were attacked--or should I keep my German Shepherds?

Will Chickens Come to My Rescue?
Looking at it from an attacker's point of view, not that I have any real experience in that capacity, if it were only the three of us in the house I'd probably be frying chicken when finished with you.
Then again, while I'm fighting off the chicken you might have time to find a bigger club than I care to deal with.
I think while he exclaims, "Good lord! Is that a Silkie? But that is not an APA approved color!" I might have the advantage.
I think the alarm system is bar none! I love it!!! Riley must be such a love.
That is tremendously cute. You have a guard chicken. I need a house silkie.
Chickens react to loud sounds and yelling is one of them.
My chickens yell when i yell it is strictly a response and an alert all at the same time.
I had and old gentleman give me a trick to hear coughs in a flock just simply ring a bell.
So i have a small bell at my shed and if i really want it quiet i ring my bell works every time.
Roosters and hens alike hate the sounds of beating something i can slap my leg about 3 times very loudly and it will set them off cackling.
I can also get them to crow on que.
That is wild Harmony! Too funny!
I found out the chicks will completely shut up if you make a sound like stick out your tongue and blow? LOL Know what I mean?
Don't ask............
Yes when i have new chicks in my kitchen there are most of the time 60 if not more and they can get to peepin something fierce.
So i just let out a big bear roar and they all run to under the light and go fast to sleep.
LOL I didn't mean a roar.. LOL
I think 'Attack Chickens' could rule. I particularly like these ones. Note the cool ninja moves at the beginning of the flic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8XuYeZs1Yw
Ninja Dahlianut
loved the video very funny
Wonderful video, dahlianut! I saw all my chickens in ever scene.
Just one question:
Are you related to grownut?--cause I noticed that you have the same last name....
I think we may be distant cousins. Not only do we have the same last name she lives under a rock (sometimes) and I live under my garden gate (sometimes).

what terrible news?
Yea what terrible news?
Riley drowned last night.
OMG... WHAT???
Who is Riley?
Harmony - see beginning of this thread.
She tried to come to the house at dusk and fell in the pond. It is very shallow, but for some reason she couldn't get out. I found her when I went to bring her in for the night.
I think Silkies may be more vulnerable to drowning because their feathers don't shed water and they become water-logged very quickly. The pond is only a foot deep at the deepest. I never thought it could happen.
Some people put some mesh stuff across their pond to stop coons from getting their koi, or herons from standing in it. I wonder if you could get some of that stuff just as a preventive measure?
OH!!! CAT I'm so sorry for your loss if you need anything just let me know.
