Old newbie (starting over)

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

Haven't played with AVs for awhile...
Now I'm getting the urge again.
Found a decent noid at Home Depot...
Promised myself I won't start ebaying again...but you know how that goes!
Here's a pic of my new noid...only AV for now.

Oh Sharon,be careful!! I'm thinking of starting up again, too.I know I won't stop with less than 2-3 hundred gessies and begonias.I'm a hopeless adict.LOL Maybe after I retire?????

Lynn

I AM retired...that's part of my plant problem...now I have the time, but am trying to remember I have to live on Social Security ...can't go wild on ebay or ordering. Sigh....
Probably a good thing?????

Hi Sharon,
I'm starting over too. I lost most of my AV's last year to mealybugs and only had 1 leaf survive the summer. I don't have many out of the ordinary plants to offer in trade, so I keep checking the Marketplace to see if anything appeals to me.
There are some beautiful offerings on there, I am just not good at propagating the leaves, so I will probably go the big box noid route also!

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Welcome ladies..2manyplants thats a lovely AV your growing ^_^

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

2manyplants,
Once the bug really bites you again, you will find so many people wanting to trade or give away excess plants and leaves that most of your expense will just be the ingredients to mix your soil and a good quality food.
You don't even need pots to start, just bathroom Solo cups and some sort of homemade prop box and maybe a few shoplights if your home is too dark.
For minis especially,I love old brandy snifters, etc. thay are so easy to find at garage sales or Goodwill.
Happy you have the time now.

Welcome aboard to a group of gessie lovers and yes, we have great sales compared to ebay on DG Marketplace. YOu have to get familiar with it. We are so happy to have you on the forum.
Gail ^__^

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Let me try again ^_^

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Thank you, Syrumani!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I did it!

Bedford, VA(Zone 7a)

Lynn, how do you keep from overwatering in brandy snifters and such?

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

where is underscore? for a smiley face?
bonnie

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

It is above the - (minus) so shift - makes a _

edited to add: there is a great glove co-op going on. (I bought the nitrile the last co-op and they are awesome !

i have nothing above my minus key, your talking about the numbers?

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

Not the one on the number keypad the one on the qwerty keyboard. (sorry--forgot about that)

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

i guess mine does'ent work.. i have tried them all.

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

Be sure to hold down the shift key (caps lock will not work) when you hit the - (the one next to the 0) and it should work. There can be no spaces between either of the the ^ and the_ . It took me awhile to get it right.

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

mrsbonnie - Try this . . . hold down the Shift key, then click the following buttons on your keyboard . . . 6-6. The "-" is the button on the right side of the 0 (number) on the number row at the top of the keyboard (under the F-keys).

There is also the Test forum: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/test/all/ . I would suggest going there, and looking at other posts, or start a practice thread . . . I've got a few in there when I was figuring out the italics, quoting, etc.

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Dragonfly53,
Water them carefully with an iced tea spoon or an eyedropper.Let the water run down the insides of the glass, not right on the crown. You can put a layer of stones, sand or long spaghnam moss underneath if you want to.Think of it as a terrarium without a lid.Mini Sinningias are outstanding planted this way.

HA! On the GW AV forum someone else put up a pic of a HD plant for possible ID.
They think it's Optimara Anika. Looks mighty like mine.
I'm gonna pretend it is...don't plan on showing or selling, etc...so to anyone I give leaves to it will remain a 'NOID', but I'm a-gonna call her Anika just for my own info!
Nice to have a name, even if it's a 'maybe'!
;0)
Sharon, who is looking (and bidding) at ebay waaaay too much...

(Zone 1)

If it's Optimara, it could very well be Rhapsodie Anika! Check this out: http://www.optimara.com/optimarafieldguide/varietiesa-l/anika.html

Sure looks like your AV!

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

Could be!!
Thanks!
S.

(Zone 1)

You're welcome ... it's a pretty one!

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

What is the GW AV forum? And I'm gonna try this... ^_^
Hmmm-is it supposed to make a smilie?

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

I think that is the "other" gardening community-- Garden Web

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

Yep, Garden Web.
A lot of us in the Southwest Forum fled to Dave's when they changed the way they did things....some of us still sneak back there on occasion just to see what's happening.
Usually it's not much...lol...
But I did probably get my noid sorta kinda identified.
That's a good thing...
=0)

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

I had been posting there a few years ago, when Joseph (Gerris2) told me about DG . . . I don't think I've been back but once, and that was only to answer a message . . .

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Thanks-I musta been suffering from brain drain after a long day at work! I visit the GW from time to time also.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I don't even know what it is...........never been there ...........and have no use to go there.........(smiling)

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Hmmm....anyone gone there lately? Do they have a violet forum? ;:-O ... I once fell asleep waiting for a page to load!

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

went there a couple months ago to post a trade-- had one person respond, who never got back to me. Not nearly as fun over there.
