Hello all. My son's amazing kindergarten teacher would like to borrow an incubator to hatch eggs in January/February. I don't think she realizes that there are no runs that time of year. But, it is a request that is near and dear to my heart, so I am more than happy to oblige. We are looking for an incubator in our area to rent.....if that is possible?!?!?!?
Thanks in advance, and isn't this a great thing for all kids to experience?
Incubator to borrow for school- West Palm Beach, FL
I remember doing that in school. It did make a huge impression on me!
Have you considered building one for the school? They are not hard to make. See the "Sticky" at the top of the forum. There are simple instructions on the internet for making them from styrofoam shipping boxes.
I had a TERRIBLE eggsperience hatching at my school. The only positive was that the kid's learned the "survival of the fittest" thing.......we only had ONE chick survive. Three others hatched, but then got some terrible leg problem.........it was awful. You need to be really careful about temperatures - many schools turn the heat off at night and on the weekends.....makes it hard to regulate the incubator (at least that's part of my theory).
Make sure that you get your eggs from a reputable/high success rate person. I got mine from a local university, that had supposedly had a run of bad luck. The kids convinced me to do a second hatch a month later, which was slightly more successful (at least no deaths AFTER the hatch!!) - but I have yet to do it again. That was 3 or 4 years ago now.
