Looking for Calathea "Blue Ice", among other things
CLOSED: Have: Calathea crotaliferia Yellow Rattleshaker
I'm interested!!!! I have C. Blue Ice, Green Ice and White Ice. Let me check tomorrow to make sure that I can trade off of my Blue Ice.
wow never seen this plant before. looks cool though.
Oh Oh I forgot to post, from Florida, I cannot send any plants to TX, CA, HI, AZ or LA due to agricultural laws in those states that prohibit "unauthorized" entry of plant material from Florida.
That's too bad. Those states are probably the ONLY ones that may have what you are looking for since we can grow them outdoors. Good Luck though! The Blue Ice it to die for!
Yeah, we can grow them outdoors to here in Florida. There may be a fellow Floridian floating around who has something interesting. I grow this particular calathea in the ground here.
I've got blue ice, and a few others, maybe I can trade twice for yours and trade one off to Flower junkie. LOL
i'll go gather a list of what I have to trade.
ok, spoke too soon on blue ice. I know I have a couple of those ice ones got from flower junkie but their hidden now and I can't seem to find them, I did come across a fw others, I'm not much into the trading spirits right now, but if there is anything I"ve listd here would be glad to trade, if not, I totally understand . I'd want the blue ice too if I did't have it, it's georgious
A few things I did find I can trade.
kaempheria bronze, gilberti jungle gold, alba satin checks, rotunda raven
calathea purple eclipse, electric shock, helen kennedy, majestica, tegrina.
Thanks Kathy! You are a Gem for thinking of my.
Daisy
I have green ice if interested.
Hi Kathy Ann,
well, whatever you would do with plants once they got to you isn't really my business, but, in any case, I only have one division to trade. Its about 3 feet tall, with 6-7 leaves. I am afraid that I already possess all of the stuff on your ginger and calathea list, but I appreciate the offers.
I can probably find a Blue Ice locally, I used to have it, but unfortunately left it behind when we moved. I bought it locally for about $7. I just haven't seen them around lately.
Yellow Rattleshaker is a somewhat hard to locate plant, maybe I'll just hold onto it.
Ok, thanks, Daisy we'll just have to buy it from aloha next spring.
Kathy,
I found some, we'll have to buy in large quantities but, can get them CHEAP! Sending you d-mail with details to see if you are interested in some. LOL! Where there is a will there is a way!
Daisy
Good Luck, ordering from Aloha Tropicals has been spotty at best for years now. I actually bought this plant from Aloha way back in 1993-94, along with the Red Rattleshaker. I guess if you call over $20 cheap for what will be a one stalk plant or a leafless rhizome when it arrives (if it arrives), you have a bigger plant budget than me, LOL.
Just a note about this plant to anyone interested in growing it, it is a large clumping calathea. Large means, it gets to be about 10 feet tall and has a spread of about 8-10 feet as well. Not a plant for anyone with limited space. You can get it to bloom in a container, one it reaches a mature size (about 6-7 feet or more). It will freeze back in zone 9 and even in zone 10a sometimes, but will comeback from the rhizome. Everytime it freezes back, its like a heliconia...you lose a season of potential blooms.

Yaah, I heard that too gothqueen, is why i'm holding on to my things I bought from them till I find out if their what I bought. I hate that. I hear alot of folks say good things and heard a couple say bad things. they have such beautifulstuff too.
daisy thanks.
Well, they have been in business a long time, but it seems that more attention was payed to running the business properly in the past than in the present, at least according to friends who still try to use them. I know they have a very mixed review on Garden Watchdog. I cannot actually say anything negative about them in today's time, because I stopped ordering from them several years ago when I got either substandard plants, plants that were teensy-tiny for the amount I paid, or when they were either always "out" of what I wanted or substituted things without asking that were not what I ordered. I used to be on a first name basis with Andy, the owner, but I have not talked to him in years. He is a very very nice guy. I think his business got so successful, it may have overwhelmed him.
You have to realize that being located in California, they have higher operating costs, and they seemingly used to have absolutely no compunction about charging a ton for their stuff. That's okay, if its stuff that's worth it, but you can get some of their stuff elsewhere, larger plants for a lot less. Actually I can get a lot of it in South Florida when I go down there to visit friends in Sarasota and Ft Lauderdale, in person, and not have to pay shipping for a small "start", I can get a big plant. But with the economy like it is we take a lot less driving trips down South than we used to.
I don't mind paying the bucks for something that's truly rare or hard to locate if there's no other way to get it, but there usually IS another way (like trading). I like to trade, but I have to get things that I don;t already have which I can use.
So, my Rattleshaker is still available, for the right trade.
I appreciate the offer of the green ice, hiddenlily, but actually the only one of the "ice" calatheas I want is the blue.
