Safe and Sound and I caught the killer!!!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I was able to put the chickens inside the new coop last night for the first time. It is no where near "finished" and looks horrid.. but the chickens will sleep well as soon as they get used to their new home. Now that they are safe, I can take my time finishing (except for the door) and the "pressure" is off.
I divided it in 1/2 so it's a condo.. LOL Two, Two, Two Coops in one! They both have their own "apartment" ... LOL

The best part is..... I caught the killer trying to get in. It is a neighbor's dog. It was trying to get in and I saw it! It is the same dog that has tried to attack me on several occasions, and now he is DONE FOR.
I got white hair off the fence the first time it killed my dear Roos..
I got white hair off the second time it tore open a cage..
Now I saw it.
I'm soooooo glad! Now I can call Animal Control and be 100% sure this is the dog that killed my roos.

Sugar Valley, GA(Zone 7b)

WAY TO GO ZZ!!!!!! Personally, I would have shot him!!! You be sure and tell AC that the thing tried to attack YOU !!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

They will know.. cause this dog charged at me a couple of months ago.. It ran at my Assistant manager who is in her 70's and she said it got close enough for her to hit it with a stick!
I am livid.. and thrilled to know what it was at the same time.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Here is what Animal Control told me.
I am absolutely within my rights to kill the dog if I see it injuring, killing OR harassing my chickens on my property. He said the Sheriff doesn't agree and would probably arrest me, but he got the law book out and showed me.
He also said I was allowed 30 hens and 1 roo on 5 acres... so the 3 roos were against the rules anyway. So Hang me.. I'm a criminal.. LOL
He left a note for the dog owner.. and is coming back later in the week to bring a huge dog trap if I need it.
I cannot talk to the dog owner.. He has it "in" for me cause I am the manager here and residents have thrown papers over the fence and he blames me. LOL Like I really care.
I don't want to kill the dog. I'm relieved that I won't go to jail if I do though.

I asked about a permit since he said the only way around the one roo law was if I had a permit for food production.. He said I would have to be Foster Farms basically.

Go figure.. All this cause a neighbor's dog is a chicken killer?

The Dalles, OR

I HATE IT when people are so stupid and inconsiderate that they allow their dogs to pay the ultimate penalty for their actions. That just breaks my heart.
But, if I caught a dog or human too for that matter, hurting or killing anything of mine, they would be in serious trouble as I value my animals as much as I value my own children.
I so hope you can catch that dog without having to kill it. Also, if you do catch it alive, you can hold the owner responsible for any damages the dog does.
If you kill the animal you could face some really severe charges. And sorry to say that a person who is in the right, just doesn't have any rights anymore. Seems only the criminals have rights.
I know where I live, I am having some real problems with one neighbor shooting my cats with a pellet gun. The cats are not doing anything wrong other than just walking across the street to the other neighbor's house. And then the cat's walk back again. The neighbor's cats have been shot too.
Now their children have taken to throwing rocks at my cages that have my chickens inside for the daylight hours and have hit my house. I have gone to their landlord but I might as well spit in the wind for all the good it does.
So, I have put some IR camera's all around my house which I can watch on my tv and record if I had a VCR or a DVR, (working on that one, they are expensive),
AND THEN, I'm taking the video AND some still pics to the landlord.
I have told him, when I have the proof I need, I am going to sue this place where I live. Jerks anyway. I am sick of my critters being hurt. They have shot at my dogs too which are inside their own fence.
Some of my neighbors have also had their dogs and their house shot at.
All of the dogs are inside fences and houses don't move. A person would think that the landlord would kick them out, but he's to concerned about getting a HUD check to think about anything else.
So, I am now waiting with fresh batteries and a camera. hehehehe
Thanks for letting me vent everyone. Sometimes I break down and cry because I feel so helpless.

We are here for you. Good luck.

You are so right! Actually, in all my years around animals.. it was always a human's fault when one got hurt..

I'm sorry that is happening to you. It is such a waste of time and energy.. not to mention the stress involved. I don't understand people's reasoning when it comes to pets sometimes!

I have no desire to kill that dog.. NONE. Please don't get me wrong. I am not out to start a neighborhood war with anyone, let alone let the animal suffer because of humans. (any more than he already is about to) I've seen enough of that in my lifetime. I just want to be safe and my animals to be safe. I've taken precautions for my chickens and they will be fine now. I am terribly afraid of that dog when I make my rounds at work in the morning.. I wish for my own safety.

The dog may be trapped if the owner doesn't comply. I actually don't even want that either, because that is the war mentioned above.

I do hope this ends peacefully.

Sorry to hear you Roos got killed ZZ. Glad you figured out the culpret too. I would have shot the dog too. Some dogs are just killers. They don't kill because they are hungry, they kill for the pleasure of killing. I have a Jack Russell that is like that. She killed 3 of my hens just to kill them. I would have shot her myself if my husband and not stopped me. Never have liked the dog, she is sneaky. We have 5 dogs, 3 French bulldogs (lovely sweet dogs that love the cat and the chickies) a bassett mix (same) and the Jack Russell. (bad breading is all I can figure) I love animals, but just can't stand a vicious dog that is that way for no reason.
Hope animal control can solve your problem soon.
I had an owl fly over my hen house tonight. Hope I don't have trouble with him. My ducks were still out in their kiddie pool. I think the owl was scoping them out.

The Dalles, OR

ZZ you may not have any choice. Just make the best choice that you can.
I just hate it when the poor animal ends up dying. But, you have a right AND a RESPONSBILITY to care for and protect what you have and that includes your living things.
And if I had no other choice, you better belive that I would try kill the dog or whatever it was trying to hurt what is mine. I not only would--I have. the 2 legged as well as 4 legged,
I had to use a 12 gauge shotgun and yes I pulled the trigger. I wasn't being brave, tough, macho or anything like that. Actually, I was so scarred that my hands were shaking like a leaf and it's a wonder I held on to the shotgun. But, I meant what I said,
LEAVE OR THE NEXT ONE'S COMING THROUGH THE BRUSH.
Why do we have to be forced use such force? Because people are stupid and inconsiderate and don't care. That's what.
Do the best you can ZZ. I know I will support your decisions whatever those be.

I forgot to mention the incidents I spoke of were where I live in Alaska.
Here where I live now, is a slum of a trailer court. And soon I will be leaving here. That will be a great day.
I am planning on celebrating that day with some champagne, (sp)? Would anyone like to join me then?
CS

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I'm always up for champagne!

The Dalles, OR

OK CMoxon, I am hoping that my day to leave this miserable place will be in June. yeahhhhhhhhhhh

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Excellent, I'll have the ice bucket ready!

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

There is a state wide leash law here in Ky. If another person's dog is on my property I can have it picked up. If it is caught in the act of killing another person's animal or attempting to attack a person, it can be shot and the owner held responsible for the damage it caused. We can carry guns here in Ky and only need a permit it it is concealed.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Where are you going CS?

I wish I could move.. Into a mudd hut where no one could see me way up in the mountains.. LOL

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Just thought I'd post a pic of the "Guyz" in their new apartment..

PS.. the date is wrong.

ZZ do your guys ever get into crowing contests?
I can't wait for my little guys to start a crowing contest with my neighbor's Roo across the street.
I am gonna laugh my head off for sure.

cs, my 3 roosters have a crowing contest everyday.

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

ZZ, We had an incident a few years ago where a dog from a neighbor (like 3 miles away) was in our barn, in the chicken coop and when i got home had already killed about 10 of my chickens. 6 more would die throughout the night. I called the dog officer and waited for him to show up for 4 hours; he never showed up. there was a phone number on his collar and I called it and was told that they had given the dog to someone else months earlier; he gave me the new owner's phone number and address. I tried for several more hours to contact the owner, drove over to his house many times. Left a note on his door, left several messages on his machine. He didn't come and see me or call. The next day, I took the dog into the dog pound and went to the county attorney's office and filed a complaint. He listened this time. I was asking for restitution for my animals. 16 of them at $10 a piece! We have free-range chickens, naturally grown. The fact that the county attorney gave him 5 days to pay $160 and the fact that they charged him court costs and attorney fees....well, he wasn't happy. He called me up and started yelling at me about how he had to pay to get his dog out of the pound and how he had to pay all these fees, etc., really started giving me a hard time. I asked him to hang on a minute, went and got my husband...went back to the phone and said "Here is my husband, will you tell him everything you told me?" His tune changed.

Then he said he had been at a soccer game with his children that night and didn't want to call me so late. I told him he could've called me anytime as I was up all night long listening to his dog that barked all night and was tied to our truck! We even fed it.

He came over in the 5 days time and paid for the chickens, but was he cocky to me. Then my husband stepped out of the field and dealt with him. Funny how tunes change when another man steps into the picture.

I ran into him a few months later and asked him how his dog was doing; he said I got rid of him that week. He cost me too much money!

BTW, this was an old beagle and he really was a sweet dog (which is why I wouldn't let DH shoot him). He just had the taste of chicken and that's all it takes.

Never be afraid to defend what's rightfully yours; your land, you have rights.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Wow... that is awful.. At that point, I'm guessing the money wasn't even the issue! I felt like I walked into a murder scene when my roos were gone. To catch him in the act must have been morbid. The poor dog..

I was thinking this morning that I almost regret posting this. I manage a mobile home park and deal with this sort of thing every day.. (not killer dogs.. just irresponsible pet owners, etc.) so I have dragged the worst part of my life into my sanctuary! This is where I come to forget about them..
I'd rather talk about how wonderful it is when it's time to put the "kids" to bed and they fly up and snuggle on your neck or wiggle their way under my arm, squat down and close their eyes...
Or how they get so hyper when it's time to go out in the morning and they become "flyin chickens" and crash into each other and everything in their path.
OR how nice it is to close up the coop without a worry in the world for them.. I'd kiss em goodnight if I could.

I thank you for the encouragement and sharing...
let's just let this thread go away.. we can get on one of the others that is so much more fun.

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

ZZ. My chickens are like my children. I know what you mean. There is something to be said when you walk outside and 200 of them come running to you. Okay, so they want to be fed....but I can have my "moment".... ha, ha.

Wow, managing a mobile home park. You've seen it all, I'm sure. I don't think I could do it. Now I understand why you can't do some things.

Hugs,
Kathy

The Dalles, OR

ZZ I think we are all just pashionate about our critters!!
I am so sorry this happened to you.
I live in a mobile home park too and lord I so hate it. Managers here last anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months tops. That tells you something right there.
The only solution that I can come up with now, is for me to just pay off what's leftr of the mortgage and then I is moving!!!!
I am going to have a big bottle of champagne to share with everyone. hahahahahaaa

The Dalles, OR

OK enough of the dog saga 's now.
I am gonna change the tune a bit here.

CS

Payneville, KY(Zone 7a)

I'm so used to the sound of my roos crowing that I don't even hear them anymore. ha, ha. It's like listening to the wind at night, eventually you know it's there, just don't hear it. But I think they do have big mouths....

;) K

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

Mine crows the loudest I promise you, he is at the back door and knocks on the door before he crows.

You should hear a dumpster full of a weekends worth of bottle dumped from a height of over 10 feet into a metal truck. Andre gets a little peeved when I bounce him out of the bed.
