Brom newbie needs help

Hi all, I'm a newbie at growing bromeliads and I need help in separating the pups from the motherplant. Do I let it dry out some before I plant it.? What soil do I put it in? Don't know the name of my plant but it has bluegray wide leaves and had a huge pink top (flower). It stayed pretty for a long time. Just been keeping water in the well in top. Need all the help I can get. Thanks, Laverne
