My chickens that are about 12 or 14 weeks old are barnyard mixes and they are looking like "real" chickens now. They still have some growing to do of course, but they are a good size - bigger than some of my bantams now. So, my question is, when do they stop "peeping" like chicks and clucking like hens? I know the roosters will learn to crow in time, but right now, they still all peep, hens and roos, which is funny coming from birds their size. Is it like a chicken puberty and when they start to lay eggs their voices change?

When do chicken's "voices" change?
I think the change is so gradual that its already happening and you just dont realize it. Then one day you realize it has already happened :)
I hope that made sense LOL
I have a good laugh several times this fall as my young roos try to crow. they are getting pretty good now, but sure were funny when learning. I have a large!!! flock now of 8, plus the now two guineas.
Here is a picture of two brothers, they hatched first of June. The mother a mostly Arucana (can't remember how to spell) hatched 4 eggs and can you believe 3 are roos.

Hmmm--testing out my new Duckwing Detection Tool---no, I don't think so, not quite.....But beautiful anyway.
CPO Moxon--I think mine are clearly clucking about the time they start thinking about laying. That is so they can make a tremendous racket when they lay and annoy the neighbors.
Gorgeous pictures Donna - I love the brother roos. They look different yet similar. What a pair!
Catscan - interesting to hear, I will have to wait a few more weeks then.
Yes, their voices absolutely change.
I've had a blast listening to Talula's voice change. She's the only one of the three original girls that was still peeping when we got her. It was adorable.
Slowly she's grown out of the peep and has a matured into her "big girl" voice. Her voice changed long before she started laying... heck she's still not laying ... any day now from my calculations!
I have 4 RIRs and 2 Ameracaunas that are about 10 weeks. The RIRs are pretty big and still peeping.. it's a crack up cause it doesn't look right.
I bring them in the house at night and if I don't get them outside early enough.. they have resorted to peeping that sounds IDENTICAL to my dog whining.. the peep lasts a loooong time and sounds like begging.
