Besides chocolate, watch out for spoiled eggs on the ground from kids egging things.
I always walk the dogs early early in the morning before its light out. One year one of the dogs ate an egg that was on the ground from the kids throwing eggs around. I had one of those retractable leashes and it was fully extended. When I caught up with the dog he was lapping at something and I pulled him away. I saw an eggshell but didn't think much of it. Went to work. When I came home late that night, there was poop and vomit everywhere. I didn't make the connection to the egg yet.
The next morning the dog was much worse. He was trying to find a place outside to hide. We took him to the vet and they could not figure out what was wrong with him. They x-rayed him, nothing there. They had him on an IV and some type of antibiotics because they thought maybe he had contact with a dead bird. We were worried about West Niles Virsus. This dog was dying before my eyes. While talking with the vet I recalled the egg. The egg would have been spoiled because this had happened several days after Halloween. The vet never confirmed samonella with us but I think that's what happened. He survived but every Halloween I worry about this happening.
It cost over $3,000 to save this dog's life. I'm just posting this here because it's getting closer to that time of the year and I have to watch out for eggs again. The cost was so high because one vet couldn't help us and we ended up taking the dog to a 24 hour emergency animal hospital where I believe the vet on staff was able to treat him for the spoiled egg.
