The 'pot' is a plastic tray of a larger pot from Home Depot. I drilled holes in the bottom... The pot is about 8" in diameter and 2" deep.
The medium is a mix of Hydroton, Perlite #4, and black cinder.
The bald vine was H. aff. clemensiorum that initially had a vew new leaves at the top.
I wound the vine around the pot, filled it with medium and put rocks on it at first to weigh it down. Here is the plant...I decided to see how the roots had done.....
Experiment worked-in spades
SUCCESS! The roots are full and healthy all the way down the 2' of vine!
I cut the low 1.5' off and put them back in the same method. Hopefully new sprouting will happen.....
I find this combination of material works as well as a rooting medium. .... Since the cinders are free for me it helps the $$ of the Hydroton....
Carol
Good growin', Carol! What was your time frame? Water or mist.. or both? Any additives in the water?
Thanks for sharing your efforts!!!!!
Barb
AH, should have put all that information in. I watered along with all the other plants in the gh including the overhead misters which I use for about 5 mins on hot days instead of watering around noon....and MSU Fert low strength along with other plants in the gh....
Wow! Carol, that is amazing! I'm curious too, as to how long it took to grow those roots in that medium! I keep saying I'm going to order some of that hydroton stuff from somewhere and still haven't done it! Will you continue to grow in the hydroton or repot at some point in soil?
Carol, is cinder black lava rock? If I bought it in Utah would I crush it? We have red lava rock everywhere around here but not black.
Kit
Red lava contains too much iron...yes...the cinder is black lava.... My regular mix is now basically those three elements with some chipped redwood...and I really like the loseness of it. You could just double up on the #4 Perlite and not use the cinders....
