A few of my new purchases!

Whitestone, NY(Zone 7a)

Here are my new purchases from Carol. I am so excited, because these have been on my want list for awhile. The mindorensis is "just" a cutting, but WOW...not only is it a huge cutting, but it's BLOOMING! I had a mindorensis up until a few days ago (it was going downhill for awhile), and all I've wanted was to see mindorensis flowers in person. It's just as spectacular as I expected.

Here is the umbel that is still opening..

And here it is after I potted it up..

And here is H. chlorantha, which I also ordered from David Liddle but it died pretty quickly (I'm assuming it was a combo between the "difficulties" with the order and also the fact that it's difficult to root). I actually ordered H. chlorantha var. tuit...(can't remember the spelling!) from DL, but both have gorgeous blooms. This plant has a peduncle on it so I'm hoping for blooms soon.

Thanks for sharing in my excitement :)

Wow, cool color on the H. mindorensis. Isn't it a nice bonus to get flowers on a new plant?

Wow!!! just gorgeous! But I NEED to know--does the mindorensis have any scent? Also, that chlorantha has been on my wish list for a long time---please keep us posted with pics when and if that one blooms !...thanks...

Congratulations!!!!

Congrats Gabi, on your new acquisitions! What an amazingly generous cutting you got of mindorensis and oh how pretty that bloom is! Love that one called chlorantha too. Great growing!

Thanks guys!!

Shelley, nope..no scent. But the flowers are just so striking, huh? I want to frame them or something!

You know, I've seen in the past where someone has preserved a rose blossom in a clear dome type paperweight thingy ... wouldn't it be great if someone would do that with a nice hoya bloom like that mindorensis?

Pittsburgh, PA

Thanks Gabi, and yes, even without a scent those flowers are kind of rich and ruffled and Victorian looking...definitely worthy of a frame....love them!!!!

Wow, if only I knew how to put it in one of those paperweight things! I bet it can be done, but heck if I can figure out how!

"Victorian looking" - great description Shelley!

Gabi - that second picture is gorgeous!! Nice score, too....I've been considering an "end of 08" purchase, too, but it is getting cold around here....Cold in New York? (don't know where Whitestone is, lived on Long Island for a few years...)

I just had to do some googling about preserving blooms and found this: http://www.bloomnmemories.ca/services.htm although it doesn't tell how it's done.

I knew there was some clear substance they used for preserving blooms but couldn't remember what it was, it's glycerine: http://www.ag.ndsu.edu/pubs/plantsci/landscap/h1037w.htm

more instructions on the process: http://www.ehow.com/how_5456_preserve-flowers-with.html

Whitestone, NY(Zone 7a)

Wow...thanks Lin! I'll have to look into those sites. Who knows...maybe I'll have the time and energy to do a little project!!

Karen, it's getting pretty cold in NY (although it was 77 degrees for a few days this week, and today seems to be in the 70's!). Whitestone is in Queens (about 15 minutes from Manhattan). I work in Long Island and grew up there...in Merrick. Where did you live?

Beautiful, and yes, great photos!

I was thinking the flowers looked 'hairy-juicy' LOL!
A far cry from Victorian, but definitely doesn't change the beauty of them.

There's an office I work occasionally that has a scorpion (ewww) in one of those paperweight things.....a Hoya flower would look *superb* in one of those!!! What a concept, Lin!!!

(Zone 1)

Ewwww ... A Scorpion?!*% No thank you ... I will stick with lovely flowers!

Before I retired I worked in the mortgage department of a local S&L and the Senior VP had a coiled rattlesnake (about 3' tall in the coil!) sitting on the floor in front of his desk! I used to walk waaay around that thing if I had to go into his office for anything. I despise snakes, even dead ones! Come to find out, when they were clearing land for another one of the mortgage offices on the property he was out wandering around the construction area and shot that snake and took it to a taxidermist and had the thing mounted for his office. A conversation piece it was too! Eeeeew!

I also just got a cutting of H. mindorensis from Carol after seeing yours I am even more excieded. We will have to keep in contact on how they do congrats.
