Confederate Rose - Light pink to dk pink - no white?

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

I have a double flowered confederate rose I got from a friend a couple years ago as a cutting - It's blooming well this year, but my flowers are staring off light pink and turning dark pink, but never white.

Does anyone know why they wouldn't be starting white? Could it be the temperatures (in the mid to high 80's during the day)? Or something lacking in their nutrition?

Any advice would be appreciated.

thanks,
Onalee

Onalee - I'll be watching this thread - mine does the same thing - I don't know if it has to do with temps or not - the lady 3 houses over from me has one that starts white, light pink, then dark.

Well, I stopped in to my local Cooperative Extension office and asked the 'master gardener' there and he said he had never heard or seen this before, either. That it is probably a mutation of some kind. It's not the temperatures because there are others in the area going from white to light pink to dark pink.

most of the CR in my area are always shades of pink. as a matter of fact, i was driving down a small side street the other day and actually stopped the car because i saw a big shrub/tree of all white CR! that is the first time i can ever remember seeing one around here. i am seriously considering going back and asking if i can have a cutting.

Mine do the white, lt. pink to dk pink thing. However, yesterday late in the afternoon I noticed that several of mine had just opened. So this morning when I got up they were pink. Perhaps yours are just opening late in the evening unobserved. Just a thought.

That is a good thought AA; last week we had a very full moon and the nights were very bright. Perhaps the plant thought it was daylight.

Mine are not even open yet, I must have the laziest H. mutabilis around. Of course I gave my next door neighbor cuttings so hers are from the slow strain also. Elsewhere in the neighborhood the plants are in full bloom. It's frustrating.

ok, I'll check that out and see if they are opening at night. I see other people's plants with white blooms during the middle of the day. How long do they usually take to go from white to the light pink color?

Guess what, mine finally started to open last night and they were snow white. I saw the first flowers around 8 pm. They were still white this morning but by noon time they were a pale baby pink. I expect them to be deep pink by late afternoon.

My CR plant is very late in blooming this year. Below is
a picture taken this week. I have moved the plant into
the workshop because we had a couple of freezes lately.

I checked mine and never did they have any white on them - I think maybe there are different mutations of the colors, some with white and others without.

I'm wanting one of these. I'm going to check with a couple of nurseries here in Jacksonville to see if they carry them. I hope so.

That is correct, there are different cultivars. From white to pink to red, also singles and doubles. If the plant you got the cutting from was a different color, it is possible the cutting stock reverted.

I never actually saw the plant I got the cuttings from in bloom, so I don't know if it bloomed the same way or not. I'll ask the person I got them from but she's not a real 'plant person', so I don't know if she'll actually remember or not.

I knew there were singles and doubles, but didn't know there were different cultivars as far as the bloom mutation colors.

I got some cuttings from a friend. I hope they root.

I have one that starts white goes to pink and another that starts pink goes to dark pink. They were cuttings from parent plants that are exactly as they are. Different cultivars.

I think they are different cultivars too. I have one that starts out pink and then I have seeds for the ones that start out white. I like them both.
