Feathered friend.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Now that the temps have cooled off a bit, I have been openign the back door, that a few feet from the computer here. I prop it open wiht the broom and evreytime I do I get this little bitty bird, have no idea what it is that comes in and walks aroudn the floor and been hopping on top of laundry basket and such.

Never had a wild bird come a visting and I wonderign if I should maybe put some little bird seed or bread crumbs there when I have the door open, or should I discourage it from coming in. It doesn't stay long, I usually move and it scare sit back out the door.

What color is your little bird friend? I'm thinking it could be a House Sparrow or maybe an escaped pet.

It is shades of browns and some beige on the wings. I generally see these type of birds hanging around in the winter as they try and get seed off the switch grasses and other grass that usually several feet tall from not being mowed all season. Looks to be only a couple of inches tall and long.

I been tryign to get a pic of him/her, but evrytime I make a move for the camera it flies back out and I won't see it again til the next time I open the back door.

Hmmm...could be a female Indigo Bunting or a Wren of some sort. I hope you can get a picture

I'd put a guess on House Wren.

That is so sweet starlight.

I need a name for it. Ok googled a wren and it looks very similar. I wonder if it tellign me it wants some food. I have never put feeders for anythign other than the hummers out cuz I have oodles of squirrels and plenty of nuts fo rthem and lots of grasses and wild flowers and other trees for the birds to eat from, plus grasshoppers and whatevr else they eat. I got oodles of beatyberry trees and wild cherries and muscadine vines and coneflowers and other stuff.

If I put a little feeder by the back door will they still eat the wild stuff or come to depend on the feeder and will they get any of it or will all the squirells eat it up.

I feel bad cuz it like it saying Hi and leavign empty handed, but I try not interfer to much with mother nature and all the critters I have if I dont have too.

I have never had House Wren at my feeders. The Carolina Wrens maybe a few times but not in general.

My House Wrens also have never ate anything from the feeders. I only saw them catching and eating insects. :-)

My house wren liked to live on my decks and hang out near the windows and doors. It has moved to the next door neighbor's tree house and lives in the girls window box now and hangs out by their back door. It seems that they are very personable and "like" to be near humans. (and maybe the bugs that we draw.)

I had one on this summer on the route I walk. She would be singing her little heart out. I looked forward to seeing her everyday. I had named her Nellie..don't know why, that's just what popped into my head one day!

This is a photo of her!
