please help!!! i think she's sick!

kent, WA

i have a pullet, she is some kind of crested breed, and she hasnt been doing very well. i dont know if she has a cold or soomething but she seems to have some kind of problem. it started a while ago, after i found her stuck on her back in between some doors we have behind the nest boxes and the boxes(the plan was when we built the coop that we would slide the doors and collect the eggs) she seems to have no energy and can barely hold her head up!!! she is eating and drinking but never forages in the pasture with the other chickens. im begining to wonder if she was injered when she fell behind the boxes! should i quarantine her!?!?!?!
please help!!!:(

Lodi, United States

I would quarentine her in a nice warm box with plenty of care and see how she does. If none of the other chickens become ill, it may be that there is something wrong with her that she can recover from or that is just attacking her--like a genetic disease. What kind is she?

kent, WA

im not sure, she is black and white, and she has an extra toe. also, like i said, she is a crested breed. at first i thought she just could'nt see! so then i trimed the feathers around her eyes, but she still acts the same way. :(

Does she sneeze? Does she have any nose discharge - watery or goopy? What does her poop look like? Firm or runny and nasty? How are her eyes - are they watery? Have you checked her carefully for mites or lice? Check around her vent, look closely between her neck feathers for nasty crawling things - tiny things! If you can open her mouth, look carefully inside it for any symptoms - white patches or yellow stuff or anything like that. Does her crop feel full?

Let us know some more symptoms and maybe we can help more.

i just went out and separated her. she is doing much worse. she was in the same place i put her 45 minutes ago and had her head on the ground. her eyes look normal and so does her nose.she doent seem to have mites and her mouth looked normal. her crop is almost full but she seems skiny. i havnt seen her poop but from the looks of the feathers around her vent i think its runny. also she cant stay awake for more than thirty seconds. im very worryed!!!:(

I think she is a Sultan.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I'm sorry - I'm not an expert but this doesn't sound good. I think you are best to try and make her comfortable and keep her warm, but I'm not sure what is wrong. It sounds like she might have some kind of internal troubles, especially if you can't see any external symptoms. I will be thinking of you and hoping for the best, but please be prepared for the worst. Sometimes there isn't much we can do except make them comfortable as possible.

kent, WA

i must admit i kinda expected to hear that. but its sad anyway, thanks!!!

Kent, WA

I agree. She is a vaccinated chick and does not have signs like the "home hatched" baby had last week. I asked Fuzzychicken to really watch for what signs so we can catch any other chicken that might have whatever it is. Fuzzychicken and I have had a hard few months with all our animals. To many loses in a short amount of time. :(

kent, WA

but i thought sultens were white!?

kent, WA

so should we pu a heat lamp on her?

kent, WA

thats PUT sorry

Kent, WA

Maybe a Mottled Houdan? Check mcmurray and see what you think.

kent, WA

ya i think your right karbear

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

If she seems to be shivering, you could put a heat lamp on her, but you don't want to make her uncomfortably warm. Probably just set her on an old blanket or towel or something like that. Talk to her, make her feel safe, be gentle with her and let her know she isn't alone. Make sure she has food or water if she is interested.

Runny droppings and severe weight loss and very lethargic sounds like Coccidiosis.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Any advice if it is cocci, Harmony? Can they do anything for her?

kent, WA

i dont know if i would call it severe but i think shes under weight

(Zone 7b)

According to how long she been sick if she has been sick a while it could be to late you have to catch coci in it's early stages.

I would recommend corrid powder you add to water it works real well if i have a chicken come down with it i use that for 5 days and it usally clears it up.

Are these her only symptoms no wheezing or cough any fluid discharge from eyes, nose?

Dunnellon, FL(Zone 9a)

Any way you can post a picture so that we can see...
Can you get her to DRINK at all?

Kent, WA

Just checked on our chicken. She does have a messy vent and is lethargic. The most important thing is she cannot hold her head up at all. Almost like her neck is broken.Maybe when fuzzychicken found her the other day behind the boxes maybe she injured herselft somehow but we would have noticed it then I suppose. Maybe muscular or some sort of nervous system thing. Honestly I don't think she will make it through the night. She is a sweet girl.

(Zone 7b)

Still sounds like coccidiosis and she may be very weak from the diarrhea.
cocci kills fast from dehydration and malnutrition and it may well be to late to treat it.

Any suggestion anybody.....

kent, WA

yep, those are the only symtoms we can see and if she makes it through th night, we will try to take pictures.

(Zone 7b)

If she makes it threw the night isolate her to a small cage where she can be warm and give her the corrid powder in her water and some food avoid letting her out which will only make her weaker and try to keep her calm.

I hope the best for your chicken

kent, WA

what is corrid powder?!

(Zone 7b)

You can get it at most feed stores it's Amprolium and Corrid is the trade name you give 1 teaspoon to a gallon of water for 5 days

kent, WA

she passed away last night. :(

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I'm so very sorry. She is at peace now, and will be waiting at rainbow bridge with all her chicken friends for the day that you will see her again. Hope the rest of your flock is all well.
Claire
