Thats neat! I'm now looking at my hydrangea heads in a whole different way. lol

Yeah - One day they were blue, next day they are brown and yucky looking.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Ditto to what pixie said. It is gorgeous. Maybe I could do that with my oakleaf H.
Hmmmmm. I'll have to check them out.

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

That is so beautiful.

You might check at your local floral shop to see if they have a spray that might help it retain its color while drying out.

Just beautiful, thanks for sharing.

Laura, that is just beautiful. A burgandy ribbon woven thru it would make a really awsome contrast.
Jan, oakleaf would look really cool in a wreath.

Wayland, MA(Zone 6a)

thanks flowerjen ,
Burgundy would be pretty , I am not crazy about the white

janet, I will see if I can find a preservative to spray it with although I have found the flowers hold there color pretty well if they are not exposed to the sun, have you ever used glycerine?

Gorgeous Laura!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Great job Laura.
I love the Hygs when theyre that color
This is one I made last year.
Went to Michaels for the first time and went nuts in the yarn sale.
It dried out so much I took it down, the petals kept drifting into the house when people came to the door.
Nice project though Laura

You have a good idea about keeping them inside.
I wonder if being outside on the door made it fade.
My Hydg. didn't have decent blooms this year.
They bloomed deep inside the plant and not great color.
Frost late in May, froze the emerging parts.

Laura:

I heard of others using glycerine, I also have one gardening friend who uses hairspray. I've never tried it. This is my first year to have hydrangeas. Won a Tardiva at our garden club meeting after the speaker talked about them, and he just had to bring a 20% discount coupon that was even good on close outs.... so I ended up with going out since I was looking for some new shrubs, so I picked up. Lady in Red, Limelight. Lady in Red is so beautiful right now. I love the leaves.

Now my task is keeping the deer away from them....

Neat idea.....love them!

I use Liquid Fence. It smells awfull for a few minutes but it does the job.Spray every few weeks. I stopped spraying in August when things go out of bloom here.
Well maybe a few squirts on the mums that are colors other than yellow.

Hairspray dont work on cattails. I used 1/2 a can and it still went POOF. Good thing I didnt have it in the house.

Is this a trick ge1836? , liquid fence indoors? I wasn't born yesterday
: ) laura

Maybe liquid fence would keep the puppy off the bed too. Thanks!

And the husband.

OMG, hopefully DH won't hear me laughing so hard!

Use it especially when they get snoring so hard they keep you awake. That will cure the problem.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

HEY YOU GUYS
Meadow wrote "keep the deer away from them" T thought she meant the hyd. bushes.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Laura - did you put them on the wreath right after snipping them or did you wait some time for them to dry a bit?

Wayland, MA(Zone 6a)

Victor,
I cut them the same day I put them on the wreath . I think you can get away with doing it that way this late in the season. I have a hard time when I cut them earlier because I never seem to know when they are "ready " and they end up wilting. They were easy to work with to because they are still soft . They have since dried and they feel crunchy now

You folks are a hoot... I can't laugh to much or it gets my coughing started back up, but just know I have a huge smile on my face.......

I'm thinking about giving that liquid fence a try. A lady came down and gave a talk about things to do to keep the four legged at bay and that item seemed to work well and a lot of the folks in the crowd. I'll be out this weekend to get some and get it on them. I'm so thrilled with my new shrubs, and can't wait to see how they fair over the winter here.

I'm praying for another mild winter this year like the last two ones...... I can deal with a lot of snow just in Feb... especially since it is a short month...

Janet Good luck with the Liquid Fence, I use it and it has worked for me.Start now ,especially on the new shrubs, unless they are something deer dont like, which is a short list.

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

I've never made a hydrangea wreath, but have a friend who does and uses hair spray with good results.

My experience with roses and glycerine was that it drained the color out and left a grey beige mess.

lovely wreaths.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Janet, be sure to mix it outside! I buy the concentrate, as it is much cheaper in the long run.
