smart pots

Huntsville, AL(Zone 7a)

Hi
since I do most of my gardening in containers I would like to know if
anyone has used a product called smart pots.

Do you have a link showing the particular pots you're talking about? I've seen a couple different things going by that name.

annie, i'm curious about smart pots, too. from google results, they look very similar to potato bins by gardener's supply although smart pots come in many sizes.

i hope someone who really knows will come forward.

The link is www.smartpots.com . They do seem like the potato bins but they come in many sizes. I would like to put some citris trees and grasses in them.

...and less expensive, too. i ordered last night after my post and will try to grow my fingerling potato seeds in them.

i can't wait!

I am curious, do these smart pots fold flat for storage like the grow bags?

I just got mine and yes they fold done flat but seem very strong,
I am putting my little citrus trees in them.

Thanks Annie, I'll have to look into them. Storing extra black plastic nursery pots takes up so much room. I love to have spare pots around and ones that both fold flat for storage and are good for the roots also sounds pretty good.

I am trying a few smartpots on my band-sized roses. So far I really like them. Interesting size. A black plastic 1g pot is less in diameter and taller than the 1g smartpot which is shorter and wider.

fbded, Are you leaving your citrus trees permanently in the pot or just creating a larger rootball? And what size pot did you get?

It's hard for me to see these as "pots" because they feel like felt.

I ordered 3 3gal, 3 5gal. and 2 15gal containers.
I will us the 15 gal ones to grow potatoes this spring.
I will put the citrus trees in the 5 gal contaners and
probably leave them in them. However I may put the
smartpots into bigger plastic containers just for looks.
They would have to be big enough for good air circulation.

Annie, good luck. Also I just realized that 15g sizes as folded pots are really great.

I've only planted up the 1g as I haven't chosen which 2g plants to use. So far I like them.

I have a feeling I might be ordering more of these.

I should have showed some pictures which also includes the growing coir.

I also use the coir as my primary container mix. It works great and saves me a lot of back breaking as the bulk pak weighs only 12 lbs till you add water and then you get about 4 cu ft.

Tplant is right about the coir. I love it. But I like the smart pots better
than plastic. Just a personal preferance. Coir is great stuff every one
should aleast investigate it.

hello, everyone. gee, i've been absent for quite a bit.

ted, i have yet to try B2C2 (BocaBob's Coco Coir =). i'm so cheap when it comes to shipping. lol.

annie, i have the 15 gallon for potatoes out, and i really have to plant these spuds. could you please guide me here how many fingerlings to put per 15 g smart pot?

i read in one google search 3-4 seeds in a 5 gallon paint bucket.

i read another 1 seed per 5 gallon bucket.

i am thinking of 3 per 5 gallon for insurance in case the seed rots.

what do you think?

THANK YOU!

So far my specialtiey eggplants seem to love the coco coir. Normally I would not grow eggplant at this time of year down here because they love heat and are temps are in the 60's and 70''s which really isn't warm enough for them but they are doing well with the coir and my standby 10-10-10 fertilizer. Winds have been terrible and they have been taking a beating as are my tomatos.
