Ive read it somewhere, but cant find the thread again. What is the active ingredient in this insecticide that makes it work? I cant find the brand here, and Ive looked in the UK where Im going in a week to see if I can buy it there ( and smuggle it back here!! ) but it dosent seem to be available there either. If I know the chemical, I may find an equivalent in Spain

Thankyou
Dominic, try looking for Provado Ultimate Bug Killer if you're coming to the UK - that's what I've used with much success with my Hoyas, killed all the nasty beasties off.
Which bit of the UK are you coming to? Hope the weather clears up a bit for you!

Im in London for a few days.... Have you seen it at B+Q by any chance? Its unlikely Ill get out to Syon Park or Wisley as I have to cram a lot into few days and dont have a car there
The concentrate is on their online store http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav/nav.jsp?action=detail&fh_secondid=9426508&fh_reftheme=promo_143466086%2cseeall%2c%2f%2fcatalog01%2fen_GB%2fcategories%3c%7b10064%7d%2fcategories%3c%7b9051018%7d&fh_view_size=6&fh_start_index=42&fh_location=%2f%2fcatalog01%2fen_GB%2fcategories%3c%7b10064%7d%2fcategories%3c%7b9051018%7d%2fcategories%3c%7b9251019%7d&fh_eds=%c3%9f&fh_refview=lister&ts=1224151764957&isSearch=false, which says you can mix up and spray. This version might be better for you if you have to carry it back with you.
I guess they probably have the ready to use spray-on version too, but it's not online. This is the version I've been using. I think mine might have come from Wilkinsons, but I can't remember as I bought it a couple of years ago!
do you know, Hilary..I already have some. My sister brought it over for me last year, and until I saw the picture in the link, I had completely forgotten all about it.......oops....: Silly me.......))
and I see on the label the active ingredient is indeed imidacloprid......time for war on my mealies .again. I found Scale the other day..first time Ive had that......strange creature, at least I think its Scale insect. Found it lurking on a Dischidia.have isolated it now.
Can anyone confirm this is Scale?
Looks more like young mealy bugs to me. There are also different kinds of both mealies and scale and not all look exactly alike.
Good luck with the battle,
Mike
Are those nasties soft? Look like mealies to me too!!!! Remember, if you have them on your buds or your flowers, they will not be affected by the BATS...but you can get those by spraying alcohol on them
I think they're young scale- they look like mealies as adults too, but you can't see them under their shells.
Take a look:

Awe...isn't that cute? A mother scale and her babies.... (gag). Think you are right, Mark...
BATS (I found) not so successful with scale as with mealies.... Those 'crawlers' can get away and multiply... Best to hit them with 100% rubbing alcohol, I have found... A "bug scientist" friend of mine dunks his plants in soapy water...then flushes the plant's pot out really well...but keeps the plant IN the soapy water for a bit...suffocates them and the water gets around EVERYthing.
At the moment then, I have them 'luxuriating' in a nice foam bath...cant hear any screams yet..!! Then the alcohol, then the imidacloprid...hopefully only 1 plant....lord knows where these little critters came from
Carol, you made me chuckle this morning. gag indeed!
Bleaurgh, I hate scale. My mothers plants had it really bad on both her carnosas and they nearly died as a result. I managed to bring them back to life by spraying with Provado, and getting rid of as many as I could with methylated spirits. I also had to take the trellis off and jet-spray it with water to get rid of the beasties. They've grown all over the place this year as a result though :)
One of my plans when I'm laid up later this year (having my tonsils out) at home is to go round her entire plant collection and spray again - the beasties are back! I haven't seen any scale, but the mealies are there again, ughhh!

There are some hoyas that seem to attract them....H. compacta comes to mind!!!! H. magnifica seem to get them on the backs of the leaves. Others....?
I'd add odorata/cembra to that list - they are nasty little things!
Karen
so far so good...A good soak in water with suds added, and a spray of Imidacloprid......the majority Ive been able to wipe off with no resistence, and a lot have fallen off...Ill use the undilute alcohol in a couple of days on those left.......if there are any
Dom....often you will see, after treating your plants, mealie bugs...but 99.9 percent of the time they are dead....a quick look thru a loop will tell you.
Whats a loop?
OH...a magnifying glass.... Maybe it is spelled 'loup'...dunno.
