need brussel sprouts germination advice, please!

Bay City, TX

Am a pretty fair gardener and have grown them from seed in Louisiana, but Texas is defeating me! I live southeast of Houston, 2 miles from the Gulf.....any special tips are welcome!!

You are a bit late for down here--mine are always started in August. But I do them in starter pots and then transplant them. If the seed is fresh and viable--they germinate very quickly like broccoli. I just keep them in semi shady locations and very moist until they germinate and I get ready to transplant them. By late March it starts getting a bit hot for them down here--that's why I start them in August. Been growing them every winter for about 20 years--I love brussel sprouts stir fried.

There were still some pretty large transplants at Walmarts this week, here in Terrell.

Hey Dmj1218!
I finally bought Dr. Bob Randall's book! Been reading every spare moment I have. Still not clear though on that 4-plot crop rotation section. Hoping to do this with my garden.

Question: What seeds can I still sow right now in a small bed? I'm thinking carrots and beets. What say you? Also, I was thinking about tossing in some brussells sprouts seeds, too. If it is really too late for seeds, I'll look for some transplants at WalMart, too! LMK soonest. Thanks.

this is just to let the person who started this thread know--Linda and I continued this thread over here in the vegetable forum, since not too many vegetable discussions occur on the TX forum.
