Hi. Jannich invited me to come to DG and join the group. There are a lot of great forums here! I've been growing african violets and episcia and now I've started to get into the gessies. I really love them. I recently aquired some chiritas from a friend who was giving them up. A couple have long necks....Chastity, I think...starting to look like a palm tree. I was wondering if they are like the violets when they get repotted, you cut some root off the bottom and scrape the neck and sink it down in the pot and add soil to the top....can I do this with a chirita too? If not, what other option is there, chop it off and re-root it, can I do that? Also I'm looking for gemella and USBRG 96-083 chiritas. Thanks!!! tish
New, and need help with chirita
Hi Lilypad and Welcome!
I grow a few Chirita's but don't know a lot about them, just that I love the looks of the foliage even when they aren't in bloom! I found this information: http://www.maavs.org/html/growing_cheritas.htm a couple of years ago when I was new to these plants and trying to learn about them. It says that some have the long necks "naturally" but you can repot them deeper. I have a couple that are getting longish necks but haven't taken the time to repot yet. I might just leave one for that palm tree "look"!
edited to add: Again, Welcome to DG! You will love it here! We have a great group of folks on the African Violet Forum ... like a second family. So, pop in and introduce yourself, we always keep a monthly bloom thread for everyone to show off what they have blooming and sometimes have an OT (off topic) thread posting pictures of plants other than Gessie's that we may have blooming!
Look forward to seeing you around the Garden!

Welcome aboard, Lilypad. Jan, I almost didn't see this thread. I think you have already gotten your answer about repotting chiritas, Lilypad.
Guess what everyone? I just talked to Lyndon Lyons about replacing my Ember Lace without a hint of pink and they said they are going to ship all winter this year. This is good and bad news as they are my favorite supplier along with Gary's Out of Africa.
All winter, eh? Hmm . . .
What did they say about your Ember Lace?

Ember Lace reverts if you don't keep the all brown stolons pruned off.
Ember Lace easily reverts..............so Celene is right.........get rid of any part on your plant that has reverted.....................they were so nice and said they would replace with the next order.........now I am not in any hurry to order since they will be shipping all year.
Welcome Lilypad!!!
Thank you all for a very warm welcome and a great answer to my question. One thing about winter shipping, it can be expensive from some nurseries, sometime in Oct is when the new rates go into effect, so check that out before ordering, just in case.

We are living in 90 degree temps every day. I don't understand why even they in New York would need winter shipping right now or even through October.
Thanks for the heads up.

Gail, we've have a cool down coming our way ... high 80's last week and this week but this coming Sunday our high is only supposed to be @ 81 or 82! Oh, how I look forward to the lower temp's and hopefully lower humidity! Our night time temp's are supposed to be mid 60's instead of mid 70's ... it will be so nice for a change!
I think places have stopped shipping already because some areas of the country have had temp's in the 30's already ... on the news this morning I saw that it snowed in Montana and I've heard folks on other threads talking about how they've had frost already!
I did see the pictures in MOntana on CNN today...............wish we could get a snow. I would settle for 80 degrees and celebrate.
