ET RU - a fun time for all

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks to all of the generous gardeners, the RU was a great success. Special thanks to Mibus for getting it organized , finding the place. Darkmoon for doing the door prizes and the food folks for doing your thing. I do hope that all made it home safe and were not worn out. Now for days we will be getting a better look at our must have plants as well as surprizes, potting and planting and remembering the names of each plant and who gave it to us. Time allowed for more visiting and meeting new folks, which was great. I hope each of us can remeber that people are more important than things and we cherish our DG friends more than the plants.
In no particular order, here are my favorite things:
Seeing old friends ( Is there a better way to phrase that?) and hearing how things grew from past RU's.
Meeting new friends and putting faces with DGers.
Visiting the unbelievable gardens of Ken/Maggie-OMG that could be an all day treat in itself.
Talking to and playing with kids and seeing another generation of gardeners coming along.
Getting a boat load of new plants and trying to figure out where they are going to go.
People watching and seeing how each use their on method of giving and getting their things handed out. Learning that it is really better to give than recieve.
Seeing the excitment of first timers and their amazment of it all.
Forgetting and not hearing anything about the money crunch, ya-ya of politicians, or other woes of the world.
I really had a great time and even gave up watching the Texas/OU game--Go Horns. Thanks to all for your special gifts and expertice. I do hope that you will come see me if in this area. I hope your new treasures out perform your expectations. This was a great time and now we can look forward to spring and another gathering of friends.

Very eloquently written Dave, and describes it to a tee! I don't know when I've had as much fun (well, except for our LAST RU, haha). The serene wooded atmosphere....You just described the day so wonderfully I can't add to it, but thank you all for the wonderful day. I will have the memories of it for a long time to come. Love, Karen

I couldn't agree with you more, David. I believe a good time was had by all, I know I sure had a good time! I had such a good time I was in ed asleep by 8:30 last night. But I'm up this morning and ready to go. Maggi and Ken's is always a treat. You can spend an afternoon just sitting out there talking plants and drinking some of Maggi's special brew ice tea, so relaxing in all that beauty. Well we're meeting up for lunch, so I better run.

Hugs to all my gardening buddies, old and new.

Oh wow, I forgot about your game David..you must really like us to give that up ;0) I had such a good time! The RUs remind me of the holidays or a family reunion. Sorry I miss out on Ken and Maggie's place, Hope to visit soon. And I hope all of of long distance travelers had a safe and pleasant trip home :0) Thank you, everyone!

p.s. Linda, I would love that pickle recipe! They were perfect

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Cocoa ☺she printed the recipe on the other side of the jar label under the lid if you meand the jarred ones LK gave away. I made the ones on the deli tray

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

no not all of them have it on them I just looked at mine and it is not there LOL

but karen you can post yours for us too LOL

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Okay ☺ 1 gallon of pickles, 1 4lb. bag sugar for the simplest version:

Drain off all pickle juice and throw away. May use hamburger dill slices or whole pickles cut into chunks or spears. Put pickles back in jar and pour in entire bag of sugar. Shake as well as you can and let sit on counter, shaking or rolling jar daily to melt sugar for about a week until all sugar is melted. Refrigerate big jar, or you may fill pint jars with pickles and syrup and BWB for 10 minutes to store longer outside the fridge.

Now for the add ins ☺

Minced garlic to taste, I used ALOT
1 small or large bottle of Tobasco sauce for hot or hotter sweet pickles

I've been thinking of you guys. All day Sat. I thought, they are arriving, setting out plants, eating, ect. I had fun knowing you had fun. Am still under the weather. May have to go to doctor but will be fine.

Knew everyone would be busy planting today. Still plan to go down to Tejas as soon as better.

I want to experence all in your comments. So don't leave anything out. Did everyone pet those big pyrennes of Maggies?
Did anyone get a big surprise plant they never dreamed of?
What was the biggest plant? The smallest TREASURE? How many of you were there? See i don't want to know much. LOL
I know you had a blast. Better than Christmas!! So nice to roll the world up and make a mud patty of it for a day.

How come I didn't know this thread was here? ALL DAY... just found you guys.

Well, I busied myself this morning right after Linda Kay left for home. She called me about 3:00 to say she made it home alright... and that was about the time I ran out of steam. BUT I did get everything in pots, planted in the garden, or rooting in water or potting soil or what ever each treasure called for.

David said it all too well... the only thing I can add to that is that there just wasn't enough time to get around to visit with everyone.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

David....
I have oi agree that you said everything I wanted to say! All of you will always hold a special place in my heart.. and the more I am around each of you you become more dear to me!
Maggie' and Kenboy's home and gardens was mind boggling... sooo many brugs, tropicals, and other lovely plants! I have to mention the animals too! Those Pyrenees "puppies"..lol were so neat. TY both for making us feel right at home, and sharing so many brugs with me!!

Phyllis.. great job as always!! "Boss"... TY for making another gathering smooth as silk!!

Karen.. ty for running the doorprizes.. that also went really well!

Thank You.. everyone that came and enjoyed the day... we had beautiful weather.. great fellowship, plenty of food... a bounty of wonderful plants and memories to last a lifetime!!

Now.. when's the next one boss???..lolol

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

LOL Becky gee your as bad as Cocoa she is already asking too
first comes fall then winter so the next one will be spring okay...let's give everyone time to relax tend to things on the home front and those going to Arlington a chance to go next Saturday and visit there. *S*

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Well, I too have to agree with David. I had a WONDERFUL time!
I did not pet the dog, I gave them great big hugs. They are such BIG teddy bears, so loveable!
Ladies, I have everything potted up, and trying to make room for some of my plants to keep them inside. I don't want to lose my 12 brugs I have, but will take cuttings just in case. Now that I know we can whack them up with no problems!
I just want to say Thank you to BJ, for sharing your home with me! And thanks to everyone I met, I really had a great time. ^_^
Linda Kay

I can't help it, I'm going to be stir crazy this winter! Is it Spring ,yet? Is it Spring ,yet? LOL

Phyllis, I forgot to tell you. We stopped to look at Mea's on the way home. I was really disappointed in their selection. It was all HTs and they went up on their prices, most were 7-8.00ea. For that price I'd rather get a OGR or shrub from Chamblees :0(

Karen, thanks for the recipe, no wonder I loved those so much. Tabasco and garlic.mmmmm

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

My pickles are almost the same, except I add pearl onion and 1 bay leaf to each jar.

Karen, I hope you don't mind, but I am posting this here for all to give you hope and prayers.
I took this from Karen's post on another thread from last night.
Linda Kay

from Darkmoondreamer:
I need prayers BAD. I am crying so hard I can barely type. My baby dog Lily followed me out the back door without me seeing her as I went to water something and the next thing I heard was a car hit her on the highway I live on and her screaming. She slipped out of the gate that was cracked open going into the front yard without me knowing she was even in the yard. My husband ran out and saw her running down the highway after she was hit. He chased her barefoot for as long as he could run. We have been out for an hour. She may be laying dead under a tree or anywhere. She may have kept running and gotten hit again. Jerry had just given her a bath and she was still wet and had not had her collar put back on. We have contacted the police and neighbors are out on foot looking. Even if she is alive which I doubt, she would still have to make it home down a 4 lane highway. I have left all the gates outside and the backdoor open. I am totally devastated the neighbors found me on the grass in my nightgown screaming and crying. I don't think I can bear this load it hurts so much. Lily was to me what Copo is to Clemen. God help me

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank you Linda Kay sweetie....She is still gone after a tiring day of searching, putting an ad in the paper and posting flyers. I am just devastated.

Karen, I'm so sorry. Try not to loose hope. I had near identical experience 20 years ago. My whippet was hit by a Dart bus and vanished for over a week. Someone saw one of my fliers and she was returned, sore, bruised, and tired. But not a single broken bone or cut. My thought and prayers are for you and your sweet baby Lily ....that she'll be home soon.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Karen...
I was hoping you would have heard something by now... keep the faith.. you have done more than what some pet owners would have done.. try to take1 minute at a time!!

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, Karen... you're definitely in my prayers... I know how devastating this can be.
My puppies ran off this summer, and DH and I looked everywhere for 2 solid days.. flyers, police, Animal Shelter... left no stone unturned... and they still haven't returned.

Please, keep us in the loop... I do pray your Lily comes home soon.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

(((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Karen
I am so sorry this has happened to you and your baby don't give up hope yet ...someone may ahve her and is taking care of her and will see your ad or flyer

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Karen... take a flyer to all the local vets offices... if Lily is hurt, and someone found her.. they'll likely take her to a a vet...
That's one thing we thought about doing this past summer when ours went missing.

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

Karen, that you did not find her is a good sign. Perhaps she is lying low healing or someone has found her and taken her to a vet or a shelter. Check everywhere you can. Keep the gate open (if no other pet can escape, of course). I'm so sorry this has happened to you and Lily.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

BJ, what kind of puppies did you have that escaped? You never found them?
Linda Kay

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Skipper was a schnauzer, and Teddy was a lovable mutt. Our gate didn't latch good when I went through it, and I didn't know it. Nope, they never came home.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

So sorry to hear that. I hope they found a good home.
Linda
