Streptocarpus "Leyla" from the 2008 show...
Vancouver African Violet & Gesneriad Society
beautiful plants, always a pleasure to look at, makes for a big wish list. lol
mrsbonnie
Oh my gosh! I haven't even finished looking and my list is getting long. I have noticed in my short two years of growing that no big streps ever win at our shows. They are always very small with about 6 or8 blooms???????????? I need to upload the cds I bought on how they judge each area........ Not that I would change anything I do as a blue ribbon or best in its class doesn't motivate me much.
There are some great growers in Vancouver and some super gesneriad enthusiasts with many unusual ones in their collections. You need to show 'em how it's done with streps, Gail! A large plant needs many more blossoms or large blossoms to achieve balance whereas a smaller plant with fewer blooms looks like more and is easier. See what I mean?
I have a cutting of this sinningia rooting now....

oopppsss. not a sinningia, lol a strep
mrsbonnie
when I saw this plant I ran to my seeds from Maruo.....only to find that I don't have the cross that this one is. I ordered Sinningia glazioviana and Sinningia eumorpha.....bummer.........missed the ride.........
When mine roots and grows, I'll have cuttings to share eventually. I owe mrsbonnie, gessiegail, plantladylin, for being so nice in sharing with me. I don't forget ^_^ at least I try not to and hope I never will.
wow that is a beauty.
mrsbonnie.
Your plants are georgeous, especially the strep 'Layla'.
Are all strep leaves as long as the one strep 'Seren'? Streps are new to me. I have one I received in the plant swap, but it is still a baby. I also just sowed strep seeds two weeks ago, and when I looked at them today, it looks like moss growing in one of the pots. I hope it is new baby streps.
I have Crystal Dawn with those long narrow leave about a foot long. She is a pretty strep. I love those with the long narrow leaves. I don't have Seren so I will have to look her up.
imadigger - streps vary so much as far as leaf size. They can be miniature and in between up to very large. Some are wider and some are narrower like Gail referred to. They can vary in color from lighter green to dark.
Exciting about your strep seeds! maybe it's moss but better yet, maybe it's tiny seedlings. Good luck growing them. it will be a joy to see what your seedlings will turn out to be. Do you know the parentage?
Seren is a cool strep and so different.
Goldleaf, the seeds were Bristol's agitated eel x self, and Spinart x self. They were from Nancy in the last swap. I looked at them today, and they are soooooo tiny! It's not moss, but little sprouts. I'm so excited. I can't wait to see them grow up. LOL
I am so excited for you, too! Oh man, they are nice varieties. I like them both. Awesome...it's not moss! Take some photos along the way now and as they mature. And then the grande finale...the blossoms!
Oh, please take us on the journey with pictures, imadigger!
I took pictures today, but you can't really see anything yet. I'll take more in a few days. Hopefully they'll be bigger by then.
I will love seeing your strep seedling progress. I'll be sowing some soon myself. When I grew streps from seed before, I must say how much I enjoyed the whole process and the sense of connection to them. So much fun to see a bud eventually and wonder what it will look like.
Look at all your babies! How nice. They look so healthy. I noticed you have plantlets of the Optimara Little Jewel series. Love those. Nice collection there. Maybe some day we can do some violet leaf trading.
I missed all this thread except for making my want list after seeing Lin's photos. Good going, Bonnie................I must take pictures of all my S. speciosa seedlings..........they are going to take over the house as they grow.......had to add a fourth tray tonight to separate them a little more...........
heidi;
someone had sent me leaves of the little jewel series & of course i planted them & as you can see they are doing well. i think they are adorable. let me know when you want any,.
bonnie
I could sure make a want list from these pictures I have looked at for the third time! Thanks for sharing them.
Later when yours grow some more and if you have some spare leaves or plantlets, I'd like to trade with you, mrsbonnie.
While I'm writing, I would like to thank you, gessiegail, jannich and plantladylin for your being so generous in sharing with me.
Took a quick photo tonight of some episcia 'Cleopatra'....
