I know this has been asked and answered before but.......... My LB does not produce seeds. I have been using the 'paint brush technique' all summer and still not seeds. Anyone else have this problem?
Lord Baltimore
Celia, Lord and Lady Baltimore are hybrids, thus they're self-sterile. Unless if you've both the lady/lord Baltimore to cross pollinate them? Since I've both in the garden. They produced seedpods last year. Some of the offspring reverted back to be pink with darker red throat like that of Lady Baltimore, some offspring turned out White with red throats. Offsprings of hybrid crosses are said to be variable that way. I hope that helps. I know Lord Baltimore are solid red.
Thanx Lily. I thought I read somewhere that the LB could be pollinated by hand. I guess not. Oh well.
Yes, we can hand pollinate Lord Baltimore with Lady Baltimore's or other similiar hardy hibiscus. :-)
For instance, I grow brugmansias. I hand pollinate some of their hybrids last Fall and had success. :-) I'm new as learning to hybridize flowers/plants. Last year was my first try and I was very pleased with the result.
Happy gardening.
I harvested a few seed pods from my LB this weekend. Not sure if they will germinate though.
Did you cross pollinate the seedpod? Or were they open pollinated? Either way, you've good chances, mine stray seedlings came up on their own.
I pollinated by using a small paint brush and went from one blossom to the other making sure the 'end piece' was touched with pollen. I also took some of the pollen from the LB and applied it to the white dinner plate hibiscus I have in my back yard. Who know what I'll end up with!! LOL
A job well done! Please keep me posted on how they turn out. I'm amaze that those are hardy in your zone.
Well, we'll see what turns out. What size is your Lady? I mean the height of your plant.
In my garden, where I planted my hardy rose mallow there's lot of shade, in north side of the house. This was 'Lady Baltimore' one year old then (the offspring, its sibling's pix was posted above). The mother plant was about 4 feet tall and spreading.
