Off Season Blooms

East of Nacogdoches, TX(Zone 8a)

On the Fall Blooms and Color thread, I posted a pic of blooming cactus. Today I've taken pics of a blooming apple tree and quince. Anybody else have plants or flowers blooming off season?

My ornamental pear is in full bloom along with every other one in the neighborhood. I'm not sure if it was the storm or the few cool nights we had before warming back up. It's thrown lots of stuff off schedule it seems.

A couple of my spring-blooming hostas are about to bloom. LOL--mystery to me.

Children, Easter was verrry early this year, threw off all sorts of different plants, down here where I live, for instance, we get many, many plants with a fall bloom, abnormal, but, there is a lot of heat, moisture, I doubt it will slow down the spring shows, but these flowers n such will inevitably not survive. The ones that bloom too early in the spring are the ones that kill the fruits. Pecan trees set fruit a year early, different things affect this crop, tho...

Huh???????????

We had a very hot summer. Under those conditions, some plants go into a summer dormancy period. Cooler temperatures fool those plants into thinking it's spring again. Spring bloomers will bloom again. It doesn't hurt the plants especially if the plants are ornamentals.

I've seen this off season blooming in fruit trees particularly on those whose chill hour requirements were not met during winter. I knew their chill hour requirements were higher than our average chill hours provide when I brought a few apple trees with me in our move to Texas. They are all dead now. This leads me to believe that summer blooming in fruit trees indicates the trees aren't getting enough chill hours.

2 bluebonnets came up in June or July are in bloom now. They survived the summer because they were growing beneath other plants.

Hi Hazel, glad to see you posting. My little Beauty Plum has some flowers right now. It bloomed and had plums earlier this year. Then it was pushed into a 45º angle during one of the few heavy rainstorm back in early May. It had to have lost a good deal of its roots because it's slowly dying. I don't think it will make it into spring.

Hi, there. Due to my daughter's horrendous health problems, I have not been able to be online much. I also have 2 azalea plants that normally bloom in he spring blooming now. I hope your plum tree makes it.

I hope so too. Beauty produces such sweet and juicy plums. I'm sorry to hear your daughter is having health problems. If there is anything I can do to help you, please let me know. My prayers are with you and your family, Hazel.

Thank you.

Oh, no! My spring blooming bulbs are emerging! I don't know if they will be able to bloom before the first freeze.

My friend's Texas redbud is trying to bloom.

I guess that shot of cooler air and then the warming back up must have confused our plants and they think it is the beginning of spring. This is not good ... when the 1st freeze comes the new growth will be damaged.

I have some blooms on two of my plum trees.
