divide some foxtail ferns. It appears that I could divide several that I have but don't want to kill them. How do I divide them? Also, it appears that one of my sago palms (which I am told is not a real palm) has a huge "bloom" in the center of. I am waiting for my DDH to get the pictures to my computer so you can see what I am talking about. The inner fronds are curved over toward the center of the plant and inside there are big pink "seeds" (I guess). I need to know what about all this because I am curious and have never in all these years of having sagos have I ever seen such a thing.

Pictures on the way in a little while.
Now I know and you don't..... this is now moot.

need to do some yard work and
The foxtail ferns: Take them out of the container and set them on newspaper or something to catch the soil so you don't make a mess. Take a SAW and cut the root ball in half, then cut each half again. You will end up with 4 quarters of the original root ball. Pot up each of them. You can cut the foliage off completely and fresh, new foliage will soon emerge. "Brand new" plants!
Thanks, dp72. These are in the ground. Do I need to dig them up first or just go in w/the sharpshooter and "hack" away?
Ann
Oops. I didn't notice you are in Katy, where foxtail can stay in the ground the year around.
I'd dig them up first, getting as much of the root system as you can. That way you can see what you're doing.
If you want to only half them, you can try driving your sharpshooter down the middle. It may work if the root mass isn't too thick. If it is, you'll need to saw it. If the halves are still too big, then half those and you'll have four plants.
Ann, there is a forum for palms and aroids which covers Sagos. PalmBob is very knowledgable and can help with anything you need.

Thanks, Christi. I finally went to that site and there was the information right there. "Seek and ye shall find" and all that. Just needed to wake up a bit, I guess. Now I know what a lot of you don't because you didn't bother to point me to the right place. Serves you right! TeeHeeHaw!!

um, that "flower" is a fertilized female. Those are seeds. for...um, puppies.....
hahahahahah!!
Y'all are too much! How about eggs? Like to think of those pink things as eggs.Unfortunately, I had to find all this out by myself and it wasn't easy. I remembered from about 2 or so years ago someone asking if we had ever seen a sago flower. I thought I had but now I know that I have. I guess people were too busy to tell me or thinking "Wow? what a dummy. She doesn't even know what a Sago flower looks like." I'm not dumb any more.....
Ann
You were NEVER DUMB. Just had not come across it yet.
When I first purchased a pc in 1995 when Windows first came out I was on the 800 number alllllll of the time. Felt really stupid. At the time I had two "regular sewing machines", a serger, and a Brother Computer Sewing machine that could be converted to an embroidery machine. (still have them). As I felt so intimidated I realized that the person on the other end of the phone would probably be totally lost in my world of textiles. We all learn about we are most interested in at the time. I would have never, ever dreamed I would be all wrapped up in a tropical garden at any time in my life. A year ago I didn't know what a sago was!
